Carl Keane of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic parish in Stz.atford offered to rent to the board a Stratford convent, which is ten years old, which will be vacated by the Loretto sisters for smaller quarters. After a combined teaching experience of 85 years, Claude Kalbfleisch Leonard Bowe and R.J. Carter are retiring. Mr. Kalbfleisch retires as head of the Mathematics Department of Is' well as a 'staff membei'.'More than 39 years ago he took up a teaching career.and 1.5 'Of those years vicer.e spent in, Huron County Classrooms. The last 11 years Mr.. Kalbfleisch has been a teacher in Goderich. Teaciing'has become a way of life in the Kalbfleisch family. One of Mr:'Kaibfleisch's sons, Jim, 'is a professor of statistics at the University ,of Western Ontario while a second son, Jack, is an assistant professor of statistics at the University of New 'York.. A daughter Carol is a teacher at' ' Cameron Heights Collegiate in Kitchener. A third son, Peter is presently in his scond year at the- • University of Wrioo. As Leonard Boyce retires, after 41 years in the teaching profession: and 17 years at the Goderich and District Collegiate, he leaves not only:. a vacant position in the Science department but 'also the Vice Principal's chair empty. When one works at any job for more than 49 . years there , are _bound to be memories and man' 4•5- . noticable changes. Mr. Boyce recalls his first jos at School Section Number Thr -dee Tuckersin•ith, an elementary school, where he taught for two years. "I remember pulling out the bottom board of the coal bin and scooping up the chunks in a ' pail to carry inside for heat." lie notes: As far as the 'number of years . teaching, R.J. Carter is a mere rooky compared to the other .retirees, having•only taught high school for five years. His other experiencesa however make up.' • Mr. Carter has been 1 teareher• at the Goderich ' and District Collegiate since the school , opened their new shops five years 'ago. Ile teaches electricity and eTectronic's:• r .•. • Previous, to his Secondary School teadhing days Mr. Carters was employed- by the Defence 'Training Board for seven years teaching courses 'dealing with .electri-cal matters at the Canadian Ii orces Base in Clinton and at Barryfield near Kingston Ontario. He also instructed army. and airforce personnel in mathematics. • Previous to holding ' .that position he„ operated his own contracting business, dealing in mechanical trades, for 15 years, two of his sons now owh and operate' the business throughout Huron and Essex Counties. "The most rewarding jpb I ever had," he recalls; "was during the war when I worked as a superintendent on a shipbuilding project. When those boats sailed away you really felt like you created sorn.ething.C_ • Teaching is also becoming part of the Carter family with another son holding a high school teaching position as well. Mr. Carter's fourth son is a banker while his two daughters are employed as a ,teac'lier and the other works in the field of music.
