pro-ven way
to recycle
When you build a compost pile,
you're_ helping_to ,recycle •
materialsthai would otherwise go -
to waste. Practically everything
that can be grown can be. added to
the compost . pile, says Russ
Gomme, horticultural specialist,
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture,
and Food•. This includes peelings
from vegetables andfruits, coffee
,grounds and tea bags, dead plant
tops and grass clippinss.
As well as being a disposal area
for unwanted plant .material, a
compost pile is a good source of
organic matter for your garden. A
corner of your backyard might be.
suitable for this purpose. A
convenient sized pile should be
•about 6 feet long, 4 feet -wide and
about 5 feet high. If the first layer
at the bottom contains heavy-
..
tettured material,' it will help
improve drainage for the entire
pile. Layers of decaying plant
material about 1 foot deep can he
added with 2 -inch layers of loam
between them. A light layer of
lime, with commercial fertilizer
added occasi`ohally, ;ill aid in the
