The Goderich Signal-Star, 1972-04-20, Page 13Cancer can be beaten! 101 That's the slogan of the Canadian .Cancer Society and that's the message Of hope which accompanies the request for funds in Goderich and district this Apr;l, Cancer Month 1972. 'he following article was clipped from thot. Ontario Division Newsletter. The very private, personal communication was sent to the Ontario Division office but was shared with the public because it points up the "reason why we must not let up in the struggle against cancer. " "Life is such a priceless, delicate thing," the article began. "Sometimes we tend to forget." V. Dear Sirs.. Dear Sirs: I am giving this small gift to the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. Mary' A. Mallet; born June 1950; died March 1971—of Leukemia. She was nineteen years old when she met and fell in love with 'my brother, Fred. Then in November -1969, after an initial illness which appearedtobethe flu, and after several "tfCimerous tests,' Mary found out that she had Leukemia. Fred and 'Mary were married two months later at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church near Detroit, Michigan, and she came to live in • 'Canada with her husband. They began to share a llife of both heaven and hell. All the doors'that had been opened to her were 'now closed, '' She was denied motherhood, even though all children loved her'on first meeting h"er• She had a special way of communicating witlryoung people that many of us lack. - She could play guitar, sing, loved sports,.and enthusiastically * crated all kinds of goodies through handicraft talents. Also, she had a knack for garbage -picking and i'e-creating like none other I hake• seen. • Dr. Bruce MacDonald came to know her stubborness, her, hatr`bd of pity and her curiosity for pew ideas, medications;: and her willingness to experiment in order to help others that would come after. I'm afraid he also must have suffered with her -throughout her terrible inner • conflicts. Her visits to.the hospital became regular and more frequent as this dreadful horrible disease increased and multiplied, destroying her; slowly;'painfully; as shrgrasped andfought for each day, each hour—to ,make a home for Fred and to know and love as many people as she could. ' Mary and Fred spent Christmas together, making all the Christmas presents themselves, and in the ensuing months no one could know, ✓ except her mother; husband; and Doctor, the suffering in every form that she went through. My brother never faltered for one instant. He never ran, because she couldn't run; henever hat`h, because she couldn't hate. He put all his • faith in God and in her, because she put all her faith in God and in him This was not a movie or play or book; this was fact. So:then Mary passed away -just a few weeks ago. She was married f• ourteen months; twenty years old. "` ,My brother took her back to the United States. Her funeral was at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church. Fred wore the same suit he was married in, the same minister, officiated, and all the same people were there, that had been at their wedding—all except -Mary. ff' Now she is gone and at peace. Those left behind, especially her. husband and family, are lost. This.smail gift of money is such an insignificant- drop in the bucket to • what is.needed tofight cancer, but I hope you will send it, if possible, in the direc'tion of a fund especially for Leukemia. Also please convey rriy support and prayers`to all "those 'people' working and struggling to wipe cancer off the face ofthis earth.
