Go ahead - adopt
Dear Ann Landers: My
husband, and I have been married
eight years ad we both want a
baby more than anything in the
world. I've been to several
doctors. and the reports are the
same: ., "Nothing physically,
.----wrong---no reason why you
Shouldn't have a baby." Then
they ask: "What about your
husband? Has he been
.checked?::
This is 'the problem. My
husband refuses to go to a
doctor. Don't you feel a wife has
the right to know if her husband
is sterile? Why is he so stubborn?
' e pleaded with him to make
an appointment an. himself
tested, but he ,won -15; ear of it.
"I'm all right" he k•ps saying.
"There's, no sense in going
through all that junk." The more
obstinate he becomes the mote I
• ,suspect he is the cause. Why
won't he get himself cneeked
_and settle the -matter one way or-
the-iither ? If 1 -knew forsure
get busy with the adoption
agencies. ' Thanks for your
help. -Muncie

• might Ile right, , Unfortenately,
some men equate fertilitywith
nia' sculinity. There's no way to
force a man to be tested if he
refuses. • Go . ahead with the
adoption proceedings -and the
best Of luck.

Dear Ann Landers: I just rad,
a 'magazine 'article that was so
crazy, 1 put on my , glasses and
re -read it 'to make sure my eyes
• weren't playing'tricks on me.
The articlewritten by a.
psychologist said a mother'
.should not cast herself in the
role of "drill sargeant" or
"goon -squad leader" by insisting
ithat her children hang up their
clothes, put things away, etc.
"Let' the bike rust. out in the
rain," the "expert" said. "See
hoW he like's a rusty bike."
"Let the dirty blousespi4eTtij
in Pie corner. When she wartts
clean. , blouse tell her you- re p
siafty; there ' aren't arty clean
blouses because you didn't see
any in.the clothes hamper." The
amthor went on to say it was
"normal" for kids to be lazy and
the way to get them to sharpen
up,is to let them learn the hard
-way the penalty for disorder.
I've worked my head to the
'bone getting my •kids to keep
their ,room S clean and their
• personal belongings .in good
-HEALTH & SAFETY
condition -and now I read THIS.
If you say the guy is right I'll
take the gas pipe. What's the
verdict? -San Diego Mother
Dear, San: Leave the bike to
rust in the rain huh? Sorry, I
think it makes more sense to tell
the kid tb put his. bike away and
if he doesn't move-teli him
again in a no-nonsense voice that
gets:some action.
Disciplining children is hard
work, It takes perseverence and
consistent effort, But it is well
worth the time and energy. "As
the twig is bent, so grows, the
tree,"

Dear Ann Landers: This letter

I cannot imagine anyone saying

Braces don't
protectteeth..
Once a chi11 begins to have
his teeth straightened' at- the
dentist's office; • too many
parents feel the responsibility of
dental are has been passed on
to the dentist. ,
But good oral hygiene is'even
more important when a child is
undergoing orthodontic
treatment.
"Braces" which realign teeth
-riot protect -them against
decay. In fact, the device itself
can collect food particles around
the edges of , its springs and
bands. 1f,the mouth isn't kept
scrupulously clean throughout
--the duration of the treatment,
more decay can result from
bacteria buildup on the trapped
food particles.
In orthodontic treatment, the
danger areas are not where the
braces are, but where the.braces
aren't. Poor oral hygiene 'and
orthodontic treatment are
enemies - they must never be
allowed to meet.
There " is no point in
straightening the teeth if the
child will not look after them
during the 'treatment and
afterward. It is up to the parent
more than ever to' see that the
child gets proper guidance at
'home to maintain good cleaning
habits.
Teeth straightening must
involve the co=operation of the
parents, the child and the
dentist. - Canadian Dental
Association.
Crooked tee
and ind estion
• Mos • f us' are aware that
cro ed teeth are unsightly.
ome of- - us - realize that the .
"buck" ,teeth of a teenage i C`an
lead to emotional problems.
But few people know that
crooked teeth can cause
digestive prbblems. If the upper
-and lowerteeth do not meet
properly, the person eanrfot
--I-chew his food properly. This
also leads to decay because
particles of 'food can't be
dislodged from overlapping
teeth. A goo'd "bite" has. a
self-cleaning action.
-Pain in the jaw joints can be
created by crooked teeth. The
sad fact of this disadvantage is
that the joint'pains,don't usually'
show up until yearslater - when

Dear Ann' Landers: Should
the mother of the groom be,told
what the bride received in the
way .of wedding presents -

children, of those who

Dear,, B.: What's so private
'
about wedding gifts? Most brides
display them on the dining room
table. , „
