The Goderich Signal-Star, 1971-10-07, Page 301 7 Listowel lagoon under control until. • fteo*up „7-11heti. yhe situation at the Listowel Lagoon is being carefully watched by the Save ,The Maitland Association and 'members are concerned about, what will happen to .the .effluent. in the lagoon once freeze-up conies.' The Ontario W• ater Resources has repeatedly stated that the spray system flow in operation at the bistowel an interim measure and that • • pump, ing of effluent from ,the lagoon willdiscontinue at freeze-up. It has also become abundantly. clear that after freeze-up, the "normal overflow" at the lagoon mu: enter, tne Maitland River. As was pointed out by the office of Hon. C.S. MacNaughton,' however, there will be no major dump of sewage into the Maitland River as there was last spring and the effluent which spills over into the stream will be better treated than ever before because of the aeration chamber installed this year at the lagoon. President of the Save The Maitland Association Jim Vallance sent a leker in. late September to Hon. Gorge Kerr • and asked the' following questions: If. the effluent spray program under test.at Listowel is •successful do you intend to 'continue the spray -program .an.a . permanent basis?' Do you intend to cancel the spray prqgram at • freeze-up and return the effluent to the Jiver? 4:4 A carbon copy of the letter was sent to R.D. Johnston of the Ontario ' Water Resources Commission and the following reply was received from him: "In answer to your first ,questibn, it should be pointed out 'that the objective of the spray ,irrigation operation was to use Up as much of the effluent in the lagoon cells as possible this fall in order to allow the effluent ' • to have the benefit of the added treatrnent provided by the aeration unit installed this year. However;at a general meeting of the organization held .in Cranbrook on Aug, 31, the association ,made it clear that it intended to see pollution was stopped along the entire length of the river. question." The Signal -Star had been in ,contact, with the office of Hon. C.S. MacNaughton some time ago and had received assurance that figures would be forwarded concerning the amount of normal "discharge" which could be expected daily into the Maitland River once freeze-up arrived. Don Southcott, executive secretary to Mr. MacNaughton has since advised this newspaper that the only figures he , can release are that between .one million and 1.1 million gallons of sewage daily are dumped into the lagoon. tle sliirlying will continue until freeze-up in, an attempt to lower the lagoon as much as possible , before the spraying operation ceases. There . were no figures ..availabJe Jroin Southcotton how much effluent will normally run off into the,. Maitland River daily. Save The Maitland Association officials however, have estimated a considerable overflow. Assuming the lagoon is full and that one million gallons _ of sewage--is-dumped into it daily, they believe it is logical to assume, that one million gallons of e'f uen t -albeit treated effluent will enter the Maitland River daily. A letter from the SaveThe Maitland Assdiciation is also in • the •hands of Huron Cotinty ,Council. Study of that letter is continuing. "Huron .County," .the letter stated, "has adequate laws to prevent pollution. Huron County has inspectors paid to enforce these laws. Tests are available. to identify people who are breaking these laws. Therefore, We urge that: 1) storm sewers entering. the Maitland River be tested; 2) that arly, drains caging pollution be identified, whether domestic, industrial or agricultural; 3) the location and results of these tests be published in, our local papers every , month; 4) at any point showing. a high coliform count a large danger sign should be erected to warn of tke.health • hazard; 5) the sanitarylaws of Huron County be enforced fully and fairly for all citizens ad 6) „a spii1 effort be made to lean' up the is challenge Prior to becoming blind in 1966, Harold Vodden and his wife, Myrtle, -successfully operated their bakery for about twenty-five years in Blyth.
