The Goderich Signal-Star, 1971-08-12, Page 3Round and About With Martha if am afraid to , mention water—in any shape --these,, days because someone is reminded of what is happening to our waterways. Some are now taking notice and don't like what they see. There is always a lot of "why don't they da this --or that—?" never ` "I want to help --what can I do?" I.. think we can all he pl"he Situation by being ° AWARE. That little word can work wonders or cause eruptions: We ha..? ignored things which. were goig on before our eyes because of ignorance`, or' because —we wanted to. Now, we are going to have to take notice and I hope it isn't too late. A • great many people could care less—but they are usually the ones who' have no thought for other peoples' property „or • their rights. '1' h eij're „ just' . car`eles's characters -'-helve today gone tomorrow. They don't want to . have to be concerned I ver pollution or things about them. They think only of themselves and THEIR - own comfort and what they can get out of you -if they take the trouble to recognize you. They won't limn a hand or bend their knee to pick up their own mess or keep our nice town neat and tidy while they are using it. We, can do withoutthis type but sad to say they are with us and WE put up with there. We should speak up and make them aware of their surroundings— make them see we are tryin.g to !wp'isYC',GYiiIJ. '•n 1'lf ',Rayy.Y:viE 4f'^-' -' • make them WANT to help us. Our town—even with the up-heaval of repairs—is still very o .beautiful and we want to keep it that way. _.. And. .the_ old maitland-we 'need to join forces with those who are trying to make' themselves heard and force these towns to back up and keep their old sewage—we pay PLENTY for our ,share .of the problem, so why can't other towns do the same? to Every 'day, visitors --the kind -we would like to have come again --remark about have we take for granted --things that meant a little more work or Money bur really show up to our new comers. One thing which we can be happy a out is the way our harbour has been used and the great impression it`.. has created along the waterways of Ontario. We should have had it YEARS ago! .. Here• in Goderich our river Is beautiful and ' one could" still Write.. poetry about it --as did Harry Symond—away back when, with his tale of the "Valley of the Maitland", Mr. Simonds was born and raised in Colborne Township and really knew the ' river valley,.. , I happened on his poem which `he revised in '66—but do not know any more about. the man, who was living in Windsor at that time. He called it "The Bright Stream—long . known as the Maitland- and so named by the settlers of old, but • called Minnesetung by the Red Man .. who peopled -our valley" Whether the word has now ,been changed to Menesetung or there was a misprint I wouldn't know, but it would be interesting to see other poetry of Mr, Symonds in print in our • Signal. , Nice things are happening alt around us—like family ,1GIl1LCreU1OISs;,plain get -to -gathers.' You will see a write up about the Allin-,Johnston gathering last week. The Norman ARM. family trecked from the foothills of Alberta . all the way from spots all aeros,F Canada "to 'be here. Their only regret was that Norman—father, Uncleetc. to so manylad passed 'on. • He was a :real live wire and would have contributed a great deal to the 'music, fun and just plain ctittin' up. ' S'EPTEMBER; 1 LEAVE TORONTO I would have liked to have., been there when everyone gathered around for the singing of the fine old songs. *TMs is ' almost. a lost art now since the songs of today seem to be made up as you go along and everyone must sit and listen to one person instead of getting in On the harmony too. You -just can't beat cuddling around- a fire, crooning the old oldies—most of us have forgotten the words—but ypu • can always join in with the harmony(-?-) Yours for more harmony --Martha N !.$ 1: ;," `HWIS ►.r •, • • ► " 2,.` ' • u Q.T.
