In the rural regions of Italy, shepherds come
down from their hills, and go from door to door
singing tarols. Where they are welcomed they
leave a wooden spoon, an for .their songs they are
rewarded with holiday treats and coins. They sing.
carols at all carpenter shops in honor of Joseph,
the carpenter. Sometimes their songs are accom-
pahied by the concertina and the mandolin; some-
times bagpipes are played as they sing Canzone
di Zampognari (Carols -of the Bagpipes).
Far, far away at first, then coming near,
They sing of him whose presence casts out fear.
Down: from the hills.they come. to play their song.
Play, shepherds, play for us the whole day long.
