BY PASTOR ALFRED FRY

United Churches.
One dat a.time'

23-25.
• "One day at a time"
In this busy world in which
we live, so many people are
always planning for the days
ahead. This may have it's merits,
btit the thought uppermost in
my • •mind as • I prepare this
message is " Are we sure that
we will live to see these days".
It is not .,o paint a 'gloomy
4i rt rather
that we should take time to
ponder these things and do some
soul searching.
Life is so uncertain, one has
only to listen to the news media,
or scan the newspaper to learn
of sudden death on land, sea, or
air. We arenow in the holiday
season. People are on the move;
if any of us know a word of
hope or has picked up a message
- of comfort, it is, our duty to
share it. -
Our text is a splendid one for
all _ of - us._ What.a great and
oriouspiomise.d s .days;`so•
th —x1aengtfune,.hot ,asAthe::;:
years or months but as thy days.
God has 'promised to give us
strength one day at a time, and
• to tomorrow with Him until it
.comes, and for the duties and
trials 'of tomorrow, however
.hard and heavy, believe that
strength for that day also' will be
given you when it comes.
' Jesus was always trying to get
men - and women to, trust the
coming days to God and to live
nobly and worthily today. He
was against the, practice of
adding the burdens of today,
fears and ' forebodings ' for
'tomorrow. It is in love to us, in
His desire to save us unnecessary
pain, .that . He reminds us that
"Sufficient unto the day is the
evil thereof".
Is it not very plain that the
men and women who are living
thea .bravest; and. most successful
lives around us and are proving
towers of strength to otheit, are
• those who have learned the
secret of lilting just one day at a
time and of depending upon
God for that strength' for this
day in the most simple and
` trustful fashion? -
• If God The Father had meant
us to carry on our backs the
fears. and anxieties of tomorrow,
- He would surely have told us
more about them. If we were
,meant to hear today what next
week holds, surely we should
have been permitted to see into
next week.
• ° The word of God is very clear
when it says, "Take no thought
p. for tomorrow, sufficient unto
the day is the evil thereof",
We shouldask ourselves the
age okt .question, "Where do we
go from here?"
Paul says, "If in this life only,
we have hope .in God, we are of
all ' men most miserable, there is
a life beyond .. this which is
Eternal, Jesus said it and I know
it's, true. (Read John 14) .
It is alright to feel brave and
deny the -precious truth when
one is in good health, but what
about the time when you will be
called upon to face Eternity? -
Some people say "I "knovii' that.I
should get right with God; but
there is plenty of time `I want to
have my fling, and when I have
had it, I will consider joining the
church".
Think of the parable of the
rich farmer, who planned to
build larger barns. "Thou fool,
this night thy soul shall be
4
required of _ thee". -
I . write as a dying man to
dying, men. Have you accepted
Christ as your Lord and: Saviour?
God loves, you, Christ died. for
you. (John 3-16) Behold now is
the aceepted • time, now is the
day of Salvation. Tomorrow
could be too late. Believe on The
Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt
be saved.
n• N
Lord, for tomorrow and it's
needs..
I do not pray;
Keep me, my God, from stain of
sin,
Just for today. •
Let me both diligently work'
And duly pray;
Let me be kind in word and
deed,
Just for today.

GOD HAM SPOKEN
In his farewell address to the
natien `Is;rael Moses;
"Ask now of the days that are
past •.. since the 'day that God
created man upon -the earth, and
ask from one side of heaven to
the other, whether there hath
been anysuch thing as this great
thing is, or hath beerr heard like,
it? Did ever people hear the voice
of God speaking out of the midst
of the fire as thou hast heard ...?"
Moses referred, of •,course," to
the givings of the law, when God
spdke to Israel by word of mouth,
amid the lightnings and thunders
-of, 5irrai: In•-lsrael's-case aion e
!.God y spake all these words"
audibly, Never before had He un•
dertaken to address •a nation per-
sonally.
This was'indeed a great honor
for Israel, but God has sinte
spoken to all mankind in an even
more striking manner, for in Heb.
1:1,2 we read:
"God . . , hath •in these last
days spoken unto 'ids by His Son
who . . . when He had,
by_.
Himself purged our sins, sat down
at the right hand of the Majesty.
gn high." , •
At Sinai G.&1 'spoke the words
of t_he_law: but _nQw ii Christ -He
speaks of mercy and grace. There
He spoke of the righteousness
which He ,demands; but here He
tells of : the righteousness which
He provides in Christ.
Some suppot'k that the absence
of miraculous' demonstrations,
the want of divine intervention in
the affairs of men, etc., indicate
indifference on God's part, but
-actually this 'apparent indifference
speaks to us of His Ipve and
grace. •
Remember, the Psalms and all
prophecy had predicted God's
judgment upon men for their re-
jection of -Christ,. yet. today the
Son. still voluntarily remains a
royal Exile from the world, while
neither He nor the Father do any-
thing to avenge His ,cruel cruci-
fixion. Meanwhile, still lingering
in mercy, He sendsHis 5mbassa-
dors to offer reconciliation to His
enemies by grace through faith.
Thus His silence actually -cries:
"The door of grace is still open.
Be reconciled while you may. Be-
lieve on the Lord Jesus Christ and
thou shalt be saved."
