-moon roc rock
What is probably the world's
moat costly rock sample will be
displayedat .the Royal Ontario
Museum for only three days ---
December 27, 28 and 29. It is a
small chunk of the moon
brought back to earth by Apollo
11 astronauts. Authorities
estimate. that the tiny rock
'sample represents an
expenditure of approximately
$90 million, and the entire
Apollo program is said to cost
about $24 billion.
The prieele ; moon ,mock,
weighing 21.1 • s s (14-s than
an ounce) and _remeasuring
approximately one and a half
inches, comes to the Royal
Ontario Museum for three days
from the Department ef='hysics,
University of Toronto, where a
group of scientists headed by Dr.
David Strangway are studying it.
The U.S. National Aeronautics
and Space Administration has
given permission for it to be
shown at the Museum.
The astronauts, who landed
on the lunar surface July 20,
1969, brought back 48 pounds
of ° moon rocks collected at
Tranquility Base, Moon. Thirty
• pounds remain in the vault at
he Lunar Receiving Laboratory,
rtab
uston, Texas. The other 18
pounds were distributed among
' 142 principal investigator's
around the world -In Canada,
University of Toronto and the
Geological Survey of Canada in
Ottawa were the only two
institutions to receive specimens.

The documented sample,
which is displayed in the
Museum's Armour Court, was
photographed in its original
location and picked up from the
lunar surface with a scoop by
astronauts • Armstrong and
Aldrin. Some of the other moon
rock specimens were core
samples obtained by pushing a
nine -inch pipe into the .soil and
extracting it. The rocks were-
placed in two boxes ;and sealed°
on the moon's surface.
According to the latest
estimates from the California
Institute of Technology, the,
moon rocks are older than any
rocks on the earth's surface. The
-oldest rock found on earth to "
date is 3.3 billion years old.
Scientists believe that the moon
rock may date back to the
formation of the earth and
planets. The findings also seem
to support the theory that the
moon was never pait of the
earth. However, other data
gained from the recent Apollo
12 flight which landed on the
lunar surface November' 19,
1969, may provide additional
information. `
The United States plans eight
more moon landings between
1970 and 1972.-; However, an
article in Science News,
September 20, 1969, reports
U.S. scientists' at the Lunar
Receiving Laboratory are upset
because the Apollo program is
. proceeding at such a rapid pace.
They maintain that it takes
almost a year to evaluate
findings of a single mission. Dr.
Eugene Shoemaker of the
California Institute of
Technology says, "Instead, we
leap -frog our feed -back which
means that data from one
mission are largely put to use
two flights later."
At the Museum an armed
guard will protect the moon
rock while it is on display. Dr.
Walter- M. Tovell, Curator of the
ROM's Geology Dept., is
responsible for arrangements in
bringing the moon rock to the
ROM.

TILL CHRISTMAS
Just because CBC radio personalities are heard rather than seen
doesn't mean they're unattractive. Take the foursome pictured
here, for example. The radiant smile of Juliette is already
known to many; she's a regular. on the Toronto edition on After
Noon. The young man next to her is John Kastner; the bright
new host of the Saturday teen show;, Action Set. Behind him is
pert and petite Helen Hutchinson, a welcome addition to the
Weekday series Matinee. Beside her is Clyde Gilmour of the
longtime program favorite just turned 13, Gilmour's Albums. A
talented. group ---and. good looking, too!
Clinton chief
issues Wurning
Christmas should be a time of
joy for children, but Clinton
Fire Chief Grant Rath warns
that preparations for the festive
season, A and ' some of the
celebrations associated with it,
may constitute deadly -threats to
their lives.
"Never leave little children
unattended," urges the chief.
"Never take u chance on
`slipping out' for a few minutes.
Only a few seconds can turn
happiness . to horror, when
decorations, gift wrappings and
trees bring increased dangers of
fire into homes."
The chief points out that the
Criminal Code of Canada
provides heavy' penalties for such
negligence which may endanger
the life or health of any child
under the age of 10 years. He
further warns that parents
should make sure that any
natural tree set up in the home
be bought when it is fresh and
green, and kept with its butt
immersed in water throughout
the . stay indoors. Under certain
conditions, he says, a single
match may ignite a tree. Trees
should be removed from the
home i mrn a diately after
Christmas.
"Enjoy this happy season,"
says Chief Rath, "but be sure
that Christmas cheer does not
bring a careless attitude to fire
risks."
