By T. Q,
The Goderich Collegiate
Vikings Seniors remain.
undefeated following their 13-3
victory over last year's
champions, the South Huron
Panthers of Exeter, in., a game
played here last Wednesday.
The result left Goderich tied
for first spot in the league
standings with Wingham,
Listowel and Clinton. All four
team§ have identical records of
two. victories against no losses in
league play.
The victory was a taste of
revenge for Coach Wayne Horner
and his squad who lost to the
Panthers in the championship
game that concluded last
season's play. -
The statistics showed the
Vikings with a big edge on the
afternoon's play. They had a
total of 13 first downs to
Exeter's six, picking up 229
yards along the ground to the
Panthers' 74, and outgaining the
Exeter crew 84 yards to 43 in
passing.
The scoreboard was not quite
so generous to the Vikings,
however, and the game was a
tight one all the way.
The Panthers, coached by
Ron- Bogard, got on the board

Senior team unbeaten
The Goderich Collegiate
senior soccer team is in the
midst of a very successful
season. They are unbeaten in
four starts, holding victories over
Wirigham, Stratford,
Northwestern, Listowel and
Stratford Central.
Stratford Central proved the
most serious threat to the
Goderich crew in a game played
at Agricultural Park on .October
2. The game was. played in a
steady drizzle which made the
footing hazardous and ball
"control difficult. However, the
localside was able to
outmanoeuvre the - close
checking Stratford team to win
1-0.

Railbirds at the workouts
were generally impressed by the
size of many of the prospective
players.
"It looks like we could come
up with a big team this year,"
said Manager Jim Wilkinson,
"something we have sometimes
lacked in the past."
Wilkinson ,also commented on
the ability the players showed in
scrimmages. "I don't know if
they are all good or all bad yet,"
he said, "but Most of them seem
to be about equal in ability. It's
going to be a hard job to weed
them out."
The weeding continues this
week, in preparation for the
Opening of the Siftos regular
schedule on Friday October 17
when last year's league
champions, the Strathroy
Rockets, come to town.

The winning goal was scored
on a hard shot by shifty centre
half Harold "The Red Baron"
Refflinghaus. His shot went
between kthe outstretched hands
of the Stratford goal tender and
the crossbar.
Late in the game a penalty
shot by Stratford grazed the
outside of the goal post in
Ce.ntral's only - real threat to
Goderich's lead.
The local team is idle this
week, but journey to Clinton on
October 14 and is at home to

tsrtdefeatd; tied for first place
first in the opening quarter when
a bad snap by centre Al Pirie on
third down gave Exeter the ball
on the Viking 28 yard line. The
Viking defence- contained the
Panthers for two plays, but then
Rontorriveau kicked a 27 yard
field goal to put South Huron
ahead 3-0;,
The Vikings came hack with
an offensive surge but -failed to
make it pay off. End Bruce
Fisher failed to, hang, on to a
touch down pass town by
quarterback Tom Crawford.
Fisher had the ball momentarily,
but it popped out of leis hands as
he hit the ground in the end
zone. The Panthers than- took
over on downs.
In the second quarter, the
hard running of Dale Wardley
and Gary Lounsbury moved the
Vikings to the South Huron 2.6
yard line. Lounsbury then went
in for the " score after taking a
pass in the flat from Crawford.
Ron. Brown converted to make
the score Gocierich 7, Exeter 3.
The Vikings threatened to up
their% lead in the third quarter
but a fumble by Brown on the
South Huron 4 yard line
nullified the drive.
The Vikings picked up their •
final six points following a weird
play in the fourth quarter.
An Exeter punt on third
down was partially blocked by
Lounsbury, and the ball was
recovered° by the Vikings. The
officials ruled that Exeter was
guilty of a "no yards" Penalty
and the Vikings took over on
South Huron's 14 yard line. On
the next play, Crawford faked a
dive play, rolled out to his left
and fired a perfect strike to end
Jon Ginn in the end zone for the
touchdown.
Ginn had been double teamed
by South Huron all afternoon,
but he broke loose on this play
for the clinching touchdown.
Outstanding in the Viking
victory were Randy Schmidt, Al
Pirie (despite the bad snap), Pat
Melady, Brian Sheardown, Jim
Redmond, John Stright, and, as
usual, Crawford, Lounsbury; and
Ginn.
Today (Thursday) the Vikings
go °after victory number three
when Central Huron of Clinton,
who are also undefeated, visit
Goderich.
4UNIOR VIKINGS
•
TheJunior Vikingswere not
so fortunate ' against an
impressive Panther cub crew, as
Exeter won the junior game
29-6. •
A 25 yard field goal by - Larry
Bowine in the first quarter
started South Huron on the road
to victory. Bowine added a
touchdown in the second
quarter on a 30 yard run. Randy
Preszcator added another major
score,
olead the BP Panthers tconverted
ta16-6
half time lead. Goderich's only
scoring came on a 60 yard
touchdown pass from
quarterback Steve Stringer to
Dave Carruthers in the first
quarter.
There was no scoring in the
third, but Exeter picked up two
more touchdowns in" the final
quarter.
One, by Bowine, was on a 40
yard pass and run play from
quarterbact Murray Glanville.
The other was scored by Dave
Cyr who went in from the two
following a Viking fumble 'on
the kickoff.
