Arnold McConnell was the Goderich Lions Club mefnber credited
with getting the plaque program under way for the club. Clayton
\ Edwards, chairman of the unveiling ceremony, said Sunday Mr.
McConnell had noted no one had ever tried to commemorate the
storm in any way and the Lions Club decided to adopt it as a
project. Mr. McConnell has been with the local club, with a
perfect attendance record, for 27 years. — staff photo
Harry Worsell, Goderiph Reeve, gave the address of welcome to
the people gathered for the unveiling ceremony Sunday in the
absence of vacationing mayor Dr. Frank Mills. Reeve Worsell said
the Goderich Lions Club, which made the initial request for the
plaque, should be highly commended for its efforts, noting the
plaque project was' only one of many community betterment
projects in which the local service club was involved. — staff -

The Hon. Charles MacNaughton was among, 1.11 --dignitaries
_ present for the special unveilingceremony last Sunday at
Cobourg *and Lighthouse Streets at which a plaque
commemorating the Great Storm of 1913 was dedicated. Mr..
MacNaughton spoke of the history of the lake with regard to the
county and noted a similar tragedy was unlikely to happen again
due to the advances made in weather prediction and in

Murray Gaunt, MPP (Huron -Bruce), was-liason man between the
Goderich Lions Club and the Department of Public Records and
Archives while arrangements for the plaque were being made. Mr.
Gaunt said the storm was a very real part of the history of Huron
County and he was pleased the province had seen fit to
commemorateit with the plaque. He said he also felt there was
little possibility of the same thing happening again. — staff photo

Goderich Lions_Ctub President Harold Baird gave credit to, Arnold"McConnell for the erection of the
"commemorative plaque unveiled Sunday during special ceremonies at Cobourg -and- Lighthouse
Streets. Mr. Baird said it had been the work of Mr. McConnell to get the project started and added it
was a great honor for the Goderich Lions Club to have been•able to accomplish it.'—staff photo.
Mrs. Robert 'McCollum, accompanied by the Goderich Town
Band, led the singing of the hymn Eternal Father Strong To Save,
following the dedication of'the plaque commemorating the Greaitr
4 Storm of 1913. The plaque was erected by the Archaeological
et
and Historic Sites Board of the Department of Public Records
• and Archives of -Ontario, acting on a request from the Goderich
Lions Club. During the storm, which lasted three days, 19 vessels•
were sunk, 19 others were stranded and 244 lives were lost.
Chairman of the plaque unveiling held -Sunday was Clayton
Edwards, who is chairman of the Goderich Limns Club
community betterment committee. Mr. Edwards introduced the
special guests and paid special tribute to Arnold McConnell
whom, he said, had been largely responsible for getting the plaque

The .dedication of the plaque was given by Rev. G. Lockhart
Royal, pastor of'Knox Presbyterian Church, Mr. Royal said
during the dedication the town accepted the memorial ase sawed
trust. About 1,000 people were on hand for the event which was
attended by many provincial and Ideal dignitaires.- -staff photo
