The Goderich Signal-Star, 1969-06-26, Page 15It all started when his aunt asked most casually: "Has the Dog had his breakfast?" I took umbrage at once. "1 beg your pardon. Did you say 'the Dog'? I knOw of no clogs here, much less of dogs' breakfasts. If your . enquiry was intended to discover whether Mister Charles Ross had breakfasted yet, then the answer .. is `Partly.' At the moment he is busy on his favorite appetizer — A Benmiller blanket of credit and renown." Whereupon my thoughts went over to the Gledhill family who had so often bought sheeps' clothing from sheep ,belonging to a Lizars of Meadowlands. "Charles," I continued, "has already cased the contents of my tray," balanced so precariously on my thights, as I break my • fast, sitting up in bed. For the nonce everyone within and ,without the bed was agreeable to Charles Ross running the complete gamut of the„ breakfast dishes: juice; • cereal, scrambled eggs, bacon, toast__: ho me$nade--marmalade, with a choice of beverage - tea, coffee or milk, the latter warm sor cold. Anything in fact to rescue the Benmiller blanket from permanent disfigurement. The home-made marmalade had • never failed as a lure, sad though it may seem to, the heirs and assigns of the respected families of Keiller, Hartley, Cooper, Crosse and finally Blackwell. For none of their much advertised forays into the subtle art of • marmalade -making had ever excited Charles' taste buds as did . the good old home-made brew. So at last its seductive flavor, the titillating bittersweet, proves too much for Sir Charles to resist, after which he motions nasally the desire for warm milk • to assuage the bite of the Sevillia. Not bad as a dog's breakfast! It was during the.'course o▪ f this daily routine that memory floated back to the day we drove to Pickering, reputedly to `choose' a four -legged companion, for our decrepitude. It transpired that, in fact, there was. no choice, since if you wished a black and tan, as opposed to a red, there was only one black and -tan. 0 So we picked up these 15 precious pounds of long fur and - sat him between us on the seat as we drove back in triumph to Good old Goderich. It seems astounding now, that this once shrinking violet, this shy ▪ isolationist , of nine years back, could have assumed such a commanding position in the family of his adoption. • Consider the handicaps. Bereft of any common language; blrou tit . up in a cultural atmosphere quite foreign to and reputedly far behind that of the faRily of his choice; trained froth birth to point with his nose, rather than with a paw; self-contained as to ablutions, and nourished on a rough diet, whatever his confreres in the TV ads would have you believe; a diet which never varies, day in, day out. His environnrent had been a kennel or cafe in a cold cellar, with only a youthful companion as hot -bottle on cold nights. Brcfught up under such conditions over the. most impressionable months of his life, who could possibly recognize the sophisticated mar} of -the -world mien he presents today? For now, as might be expected, ladies figure largely in his circle of friends and admirerls, though he has a number of uncles to whose trousers he is equally :staunch. Possessed of - a wonderful memory for figure and scent, his welcoming ritual might appear a bit overdone; as measured on an applause -meter. But so well does he understand, the potency of flattery that this exuberance only -serves to endear him to the guest: And yet withal, there arise some peculiar inconsistencies. For example, in the full light of day his warning signal that assistance is instantly required of his family, always comes across loud and clear. It may be some want: 'food, a drink, the loss of • one toy; even a desire to check the outdoor .climate. Yet by.. One dog's man night, with only the glow ot the "Princess" available, his desire to jump up on the communal bed is indicated in carefully 'hushed tones, presumably to wake as few ,people as possible. This gentle rumble is repeated • at frequent intervals until ' a flash -light ' is shone on the ceiling, when he is able to judge •the step to the bed with accuracy and safety , A complete,. reversal of this attitude occurs when his dog's gentleman goes out at night, leaving him on sentry duty. Before leaving he is given a solemn assurance of intention to return, He is bidden to take a close look; even a closer smell. This is acknowledged by rolling on his back and baring his throat in token of his, , mostabject servitude and as a sign that the reassuring' words: "I shall return!" are fully comprehended. However, when ,return occurs around. midnight shall we say, the merest hint of the key in the lock triggers a howling to high heaven that an enemy is at the door, so that the whole household is aroused to a condition bordering on • palsy. During the absenceDhe has only snoozed; he has refused to eat -his roti khana; he has been up a score of times thinking he heard the prelude to re-entry. But he is not .easily assuaged and you are lucky not to lose a hand or a leg before he reinstates you in the fold. Then, just as quickly, albeit a particularly juicy sausage, or a piece df `guinea fowl' has been extracted from the refrigeator, all sign of animosity disap ars. Restraints should help 'minimize sora of the unpleasant ' effects of these all too - common crashes; but their causes can be dealt with°onlyby drivers. there are a. number of things you can dp to help prevent rear - end collisions. Here are some of them. Don't let yourself be crowded by the driver behind. If someone follows you tsoo Closely for safety, encourage him to pass by pulling off the road if necessary. Signal your intentions - to make a turn, change lanes, or stop suddenly. Signal an intend- ed stop by pumping your brake pedal .to flash the brakelights. , Don't crowd the driver ahead leave at least one car"lerigthtrfor each 10 miles of speed. .And remember that high speeds and poor weather conditions demand extra stopping distance. At night, .or in rain Or fog, allow for reduced visibility • or decreased traction. Limited -access highways . have made higher speeds common. As a result drivers need to be especially wary of slow - moving or stopped vehicles. Stay alert — be particularly attentive near controlled intersections where vehicles ahead may be slowing, turning, and stopping. Watch , for slower, moving merging traffic. Use acceleration and deceleration lanes, to change your own speed when entering or leaving a highspeed highway, -Prevent secondary, collisions at an accident scene by 'getting off the roadway quickly if you decide to stop.
