the tongue test
"Thou. shalt not bear false
witness against thy neighbor
"Thou shalt not take the name
i the Lord thy God in vain.."
"Death and life are in the power
of the tongue" (Proverbs 18:21)
An aged. couple vas driving to
church behidd a pair of snappy
bays, both pulling evenly on the
traces: The . aged folk had
quarreled and were hot on
speaking terms. Martha began to
feel that, possibly she had been a
mite sharp with Joe, so at last
she said, "Joe, don't "you wish
we could work together as
happily as that bay team?" No
answer. Soon she said again:
"Joe, don't you wish we could
travel down the highway of life
as peacefully as our team Jf bay
horses?" Still no answer. Just as
they drove into the Churchyard,
she made a •final effort in the
hope it may bring results. "Joe,
why couldn't we pull together
with as much harmony as that
bay team there?"' "We could,"
said Joe, "if there was only one
tongue.between us!"
Two commandments = the
WI* and . the ninth — have
reference' to 'the possibility of
the tongue for good or evil.
Primarily the third forbids us to
take 'the Name of the Lord 'in
"vain, and the ninth forbids us to
take thename of our neighbor in
vain. We need- God and our
neighbor, needs us so these two
Commandments — whether in
obedience or in violation are
intimately related. .
We .need to remember that
our universe is structured by
Truth Godward and Manward.
When the claims of God are not
recognized and the rights of man
are ignored, the first casualty in
our World is 4truth." And i how
heavy arethe casualties in terms
of truth!
The "Tongue Test" functions
in SPEECH, . perjury, profanity,
blasphemy, gossip, adverse
criticism, slander, flattery,
reading wrong and impure
motives in another, and lying are
some of the forms of "false.
witnessing." A school boy being
asked, "What is a lie?" said, "A
lie is an abomination to the Lord
and a very present help in
trouble."'
Does a lie ever have a license?
How black are white lies? Is
flasehood ever justifiable? Ah,.
many speeches . would not be
made if one first found an
honest answer to three
questions: Is it true? Is it kind?
Is it necessary?
"The Tongue Test" functions
in SECRECY. When one visits
the physician the. latter says
frequently, "Show me your
tongue." To the doctor one's
tongue may be an index to one's
inner health. One's speech oft
reveals the inner life. A "false
witness"issues from an impure
heart. Peter made reply to the
lying speech of Ananias, "Wily
hath Satan filled thine heart to
lie to the Holy Ghost? Thou hast
not lied unto men but unto
God." (Acts 5:3-4)
A woman desiring a luhg
examination, came , - to her
doctor, plead poverty and
requested a free test. The doctor

her • • dress. Accordingly the
doctor retorted, "Your lungs are
in good condition, but your
heart is bad. You lied to me
when you said you had no
money.
"The Tongue Test" functions
in SILENCE. One may bare false
witness by keeping -silent when
one ought to speak. Cowardice
keeps silent in the defence of
another, when such defence
ought to be vigorously vocal.
When "truth" ( the foundation
stone of character) is at stake,
courage will speak the truth even
if it hurts.
Silence may be false not only
in expression but in confession.
Jane Adams the founder of
Chicago's Haull H use, as a little
girl had told a lie to her father.
Fearing his anger, she kept a
tormenting 'silence for three
days, and then confessed to him.
He picked: her up.in his arms and
said, "Remember this Jane,
whatever you do or whatever
you are, I will -always love
you." Every child has the right
to this reassurance, first and
foremost from his father and
' mother of course. But more than
that, any person who presumes
to be a follower, of Jesus Christ
must love all men like that. Even
our enemies Must be embraced
in this sort of love, said Jesus."
"The Tongue Test" functions
in SOVEREIGN GRACE, The
ninth commandment also has a'
positive •note. It bids us bear a
"true" witness to God, to others
and - to ourselves. "But the
tongue can no man tame."
(James 3:$) The Sovereign grace
of God alone can do so if we
give it the green light. We should
remember that God's commands
are God's enablings. (Phil, 1:27)
The world seems . full of
belittlers, little folk who try to
make themselves bigger than
they are by making you smaller
than you area When Christ was
on ear - , e made small folk
bigger and -short folk taller. Very
few of tis really accept people a$
they actually and potentially are
before trying to make
improvements. Jesus accepted
folk, especially those whom
everyone rejected. He made a
little man, Zaccheus,feel a mile
high. You have met Christ when
you meet one who does the
truth in the love of it" (Luke
19:1-10) ' '
