The Industrial. League Softball season opened last Thursday evening with games between the teams of
Dominion Roads, Goderich Manufacturing, Sandy's Clippers*

It isn't always the ball -that gets the boof:in soccer ^because sometimes aunintentional foot hits the
wrong mark. In a game' between the LegionCherub'sr and the Knights, last Thursday, these two
youngster"s found out the hard way. Actually it was all an optical illusion. The kicker missed the

'Rangers tie London 3-3; playoff
with Sarnia May 31
t The Goderich Rangers played
their second 'away game of the
season last Saturday against the
Roma Football Club of London.
The game ended in a 3-3 tie.
Roma literally "got the ball
rolling" shooting a fast one past
Goderich goaltender Carl Moller
*after 15 minutes of, play. Danny
Pepe was the - hot -shot Roma
centre forward who slammed in
the 12 yard sizzler.
George Love, Goderich inside
right tied it up 'f`2 minutes later
on a solo flight through the
Roma defence. 'His hard, low
- shot left the goatkeepr no
• chance as the ball was palmed'
into the net.
Roma took control of the
gime .for the remainder 'of the
half r which saw the teams
*fighting for the lead. Roma's
constant. pushing paid off when
inside left Peter Capruso drove a '
shot from, inside the six yardfli e: ;;
to put Roma ahead.
Again the. Rangers came from
• behind and tied the score again
%,with a member` of the Love
family in the limelight. This time
it was Tom • Love, Goderich
centre forward who started the
play that -.ended in a goal by
Tony Verhoef., Love dribbled
the ball past the. Roma defence,
slid a,. long shot to . Verhoef at
right wing. Verhoef deiced the
Roma left back and zeroed in .
with- a hard left footer into the',.

JOSHUA THOMAS
Joshua Thomas, 126 Elgin
Ave., died at Alexandra Marine
and 'General - Hospital On
Tuesday. May 13, after a lengthy
* illness. He was 82.
Mr. Thomas was born in
Goderich on August. 23, 1886,
the son of James Thomas and
the former Mary Thompson._He
was a resident of Goderich most
of his life, having lived in,Detroit
*for a short time while employed
_-by°. _ General Motors_- - Until -_his-
retirement in 1955, he was
employed by Dominion. Road
Machinery. Co. as a tool and die
ma er,,.,.
i r. Thomas was a member of
A the Maitland Lodge 33; a
member of the Foresters; and a
member of St. George's"Anglican
Church.
Surviving are, his wife, the
former Nellie Marwick; a 'son,
Capt. William .Thomas, 'Sarnia;
' three daughters, Mrs, Marie
Boyes, Goderich; Mrs. -;frank
(Betty) Heard, London, and Mrs.
George (Helen)' Cardwell, Sarnia;
eight grandchildreh and one
great-grandchild.
The.. funeral_ service_ _was_ held
at Lodge Funeral' Home at 2
• p.m; on Friday, May 16, with
Rev. G. G. Russell officiating. ;
Interment was in •Maitland
Cemetery.. Pallbearers were
Frank Walkom, 'Clayton
Lait.hwaite, Carlon Worsell,
George Bacon, William 'Leeson

Roma was handed a third
goal on a Goderich error when
Howie Gottschalk back -flipped
the ball to goalie Moller who was
also making a play for the ball.
Moller mused the ball which
didn't miss the net.
Goderich- then closed the
scoring off for the London club
bringing hard pressure to bear. A
forced corner kick paid off for
the Goderich team when Tony
Verhoef sent the. ball goalwards
and Ge

The club has asked that an -

,put on for the day, which is a
.sudden death play-off game.
Support is also solicited for
the kids of the Pee Wee soccer
league which is now under way

and the Knights played at
Agricultural. --Park 'in Rideal
weather conditions.
The game was p)akeda.t a fast
pace with end to end play and
both goalkeepers had: to-, look
lively on a number of occasions.
The Cherubs, under their new
coach, Warren Moiand,
,depended more on individual
effort, while the Knights were
playing a more concerted game.
Ten minutes from half-time,
the I;iights brought off a move
up the left wing and Gary Allen
crossed the hall over for Wayne
Ladd to crash it into the' net
t'rotn close in. Cherubs goalie,
Dave '.1lclvor, had no chance to
snake the save. ,
The knights led 1-1) at the
interval.

of play. the Cherubs took
command and charged up the

a terrific hot beat the Knights'
goalie, Jim Watt, and tied up the

The game continued from
end to end- and looked like

minutes from the end Ron
McPhee -fastened on to 'a loose
ball and trundled it past the
Cherubs goalkeeper to give, the
.Knights a well-deserved victory.

boys that -.hey kept such a fast
pace so early in the season., and
this writer can see eery soon a
very physically fit and confident
bunch of boys once they ind
their, soccer legs.
I1 was also very gratifying,,to
see sig many of the boys' parents
watching the;"gare, a. game so
I'ew of them ''bpderstand bill. it
Was ^'t heir general opinion.., that
their boys will be better
physically for playing this fine.
