The Goderich Signal-Star, 1967-10-19, Page 1.444 120th YEAR No. 42 THE GODERICH SIGNAL. -STAR, THIJR5DAYR OCT. . QUER 19, 1967. - r CRO' w `D • VATCH « • -Flames swept through the Conklin Lumber Co. wamhouse on Bayfield . Road, Saturday causing. an estimated $150,000 damage. Goderich and Clinton firemen fought the blaze for six hours before bringing it under control. The fire which is thought to have been caused by a short in an, electrical switch totally destroyed the warehouse, a . three -ton truck, two half ton trucks and a fork lift, along with. a substantial amount of lumber and building material. Firemen managed to save the adjoining showroom and office building. • General manager Jim Eccott, of the company's head office in Kingsville said most of the contents and building were cov- ered by .insurance,. "We intend to start rebuilding immedi- ately," he said, in a telephone interview. "In the mean time we have rented the old railway roundhouse for storage and are able to function until we get new premises built. The. blaze .was discovered at 7:15 p.ri1. in the north-east cor. ner of the warehouse hand quick, ly spread oto engulf the entire building. .The Goderich fire brigade was assisted by the Clinton va fire department and about 35 men battled the blaze which was fanned by a southerly wind. At one stage flames and sparks threatened nearby homes. Large crowds who rushed to the scene of the blaze caused a traffic snarl up on the Hay- field Raod and police had trouble keeping motorists from driving over the fire hose. At one' stage the OPP were on hand re-routing traffic on the Bayfield Road. The fire was brought under control by 3 a.m, Sunday and was extinguished sorrir-- three hours later. Tories Easy Winners Return With 70 Seats Incomplete election results ° at press time indicate the Pro- " gressive Conservatives will come out of the election with '70 seats in the 117 -seat legis lature with the Liberals still being the official opposition with 27 seats and the NDP with 20 seats. .. Most spectacular gains in the election were the NDP who picked up 13 more seats than they had when the legislature prorogued. Despite their clear majority, the Conservatives' share of the popular vote sank sharply. Municipal Affairs Minister Spooner _ lost his Cochrane South seat to a New Democrat and Mines Minister Wardrope was defeated by a Liberal in. Port Arthur. Premier Robarts himself ex. perienced a surprisingly tough tussle with Liberal Frank Car- ter in his own London North riding. He was only 1,500 votes ahead with 140 of the 212 polls counted - a shattering drop from his 8,279 -vote margin 'in 1963; The election outcome was sure to jar Conservative com- placency. The upset -dotted voting also demonstrated that the electorate was not nearly as indifferent to the 42 -day campaign as it appeared. The results indicated voters were doing a lot • of,, quiet brooding about the Conserva. tiyes' one-sided grip. on power at Queen's Park. The Conserv atives had been confident they would wind up with anywhere from '75 to 85 of the 117 seats. Redistribution i' raised : the -number of seats from 108. The party standings at dissolution were: Conservatives, 76; Lib- erals, 21; NDP, 8. Three seats were vacant. Both Liberal leader Robert Nixon and. NDP a chieftain Donald MacDonald won easier victories in their home ridings of Brant and York South than Premier Robarts did in his. The Conservatives" could thank loyal. eastern Ontario for their clear hold on office because the opposition made only a couple.. of isolated gains there.. But the government was badly bruised in both western and northern Ontario and also suffered some losses in 'the Metropolitan Toronto area and its periphery. In Western Ontario, Con- servatives lost Sarnia, Oxford, Perth and Waterloo North to the Liberals and Windsor West to the NDP. Perth had been Tory -held for 22 years. The Liberals lost Brantford to New Democrat Mac Makar. chuk -- with Mr. Nixon's broth- ,er-in-law. Bruce Forbes, run- ning last. Morgan Smith's 3,723 votes. NDP candidate John C. Boyne trilled with 1,340. , Mr. MacNaughton has repre. _sented_ the riding since , 1957. He -held a steady lead through- out as the returns came in but ran into trouble in a few iso. lated polls, where the vote was close. In Seaforth be was ahead by 201 votes but the gap was nar- rowed somewhat in Hullett and Stephen where 45 votes separ- ated the leaders. , Mr. MacNaughton's main. strength was found in the Town of Goderich where he polled 1,637 to 673 for the Liberals and 309 for the NDP. A wider margin of support was found in 'his hometown of Exeter where he swamped his rivals 1,183 to 165 and 137 re- spectively. - • While the rote was lighter this s, year Mr. MaoNaught% picked up his own share of the popu- lar vote t 71.5 percent from the 69 percent in the last elec- tion. VANDALS rash of vandalism through. the Goderich area has rompted acting police chief, Sergeant George Crawford to mount a crackdown on prank• sters the signal Star learned Mondsy. Crawford sai'd in an interview that while such acts can be expected with the approaching hallowe'e6 season the depart- ment had " been called in to investigate some 25 incidents within the past ten days. ",,Some of these have gone beond the. joke stage," he said. Incidents ranging from window breaking with apples, pears and. stones to putting eggs in auto. mobile gas tanks are under in- vestigation he said. One town resident had report. ed vandals broke down an ever- green that had taken ten years• to grow on her front lawn. There have been several reports of iprowlers knocking on doors and some motorists have complained of eggs and tomatoes being thrown at cars. Sergeant Crawford said throws ing objects at cars could lead to a serious accident if a driver took evasive action while driv- ing, "It would be the natural thing to do," he said. The acting chief pointed out that the penalties for Mischief can be severe. "This is an indictable offence, and can lead up to five years,.. imprison- ment," he said. Mayor Dr. Frank M'lls told council in reply to a question from Councillor Walter Shear -- down that only 'police commis- sion members would have ac- cess to the report. The local police commission is made up of the Mayor, Judge R. S. Het- herington, Magistrate Glen. Hays and Police Chief Fred Minshall. Councillor Sheardown argued that councillors had the right to hear their findings. He has been urging the investigation into why the Goderich police budget if $67,000 compared with approximately $27,000 for other towns of comparable size. • "We don't want any of this swept under 'the rug," said Sheardown. "Council has the right to know what the coM• mission found out. Otherwise what is the use in having an investigation if the findings are not made public." Flushed with the tirade, Councillor Bays in turn critic- lized Councillor Robinson for his -see m 1 Pigly unwarranted attack on Reeve Such. According to Councillor Rob. inson Reeve Such did little to further the towrk chances of . getting relief from the $75,000 wnich the town is assessed for county road's. Mayor Dr. Frank Mills, made little comment 'throughout the proceedings except to say that members of town council who go as a delegation to repre- sent .the town are expected to put lthe interests of Goderich before those of the county. Reeve Such was urged to re- fute Councillor Robinson's. charges but chose to ren(ain silent., Councillor Bruce Erskine moved that the proceedings be discussed in committee of the whole. (A maneuver whic1' n ostensibly bars the press from reporting on the proceedings.) Earlier Councillor Robinson had charged that the Reeve had OPP REPORT Ontario Provincial Police, Goderich detachment report only three minor accidents in the vicinity ofClinton during the past week. On Wednesday, October 11. on Stanley Township Road west of Highway 4, Henry Gerrit4,R.R. 1 Clinton and George Bak, Can. ?clean Forces Base, Clinton, were involved in a two—car ac.' cident resulting in approxima- tely $500 damage to both veh- icles.. The point of contention be- hind the furor is that Goderich is assessed $75,000 for County roads. Of this sum the town __ gets a 45 percent rebate. It can it it wishes apply for a full 50 percent rebate. Mayor Mills feels that the town s ioul'd € .,t the full 50 percent Vebate and that Reeve Such should have pressed to this end at the meeting with county council. Councillor Robinson 'wants the town to secede from the county entirely, while ,Reye Such maintains that what is good for "the county is good for God- erich. "No useful purpose can be served by pulling out of county council," he said. Such is also a member of the County coun- cil. Asked later if there could be a conflict of, interest between 'his dual role of town council- lor and county councillor, Reeve Such said, he felt he was in a good position to serve the town as a county council member. With" the' withdrawal of the seconder the motion to censure Such was lost. Johnston' Youth Still "Critical" Paul Johnston, 19, of 171South .
