Appendix"
"Grumbling appendix'P is not
a • medical or surgical term.'
It is often used by the public
to describe a -chronic or sub.
acute inflammation of the ap.
pendix. Such . a condition does
not .call for immediatesurgery,
according to the Ontario Medi.
cal Association.
Chronic or sub -acute appen.
dicitis, however, can. in time
progress to the acute 'stage.
When 'it does, it is accompanied
a sudden increase in = b.
dominal pairs, very o en w
nausea and vomiting. The '•a.
tient may become acutely' t ill
. within a few hours. Early di.
agnosis and immediate surgery
is the rule. •
If an appendix can be said
to. grumble, it may in time,
like a volcano, comic to the point
of. eruption. The 0.M.A. says
this must be avoided at all
costs.

- The term "blue babies" has
over the years been applied to
babies . born with congenital
heart defects in which the bood
does not take up as much oxy.
gen as it does in a normal
person. Consequently the baby's..
finger tips and lips look. blue:
The likelihood of a baby being
born with . a heart defect in
which blueness is a factor is
much less than one in 100, ac-
cording to the Ontario Medical
Association. Before 1949 there
was
could
be done
that co
nothing
for these babies. Most of them
lived short, unhappy lives, short
of breath and unable to cope
with the normal activity of a
growing child. With the develop.
ment of the Taussig -Blalock
operation it is possible to create
an extra connection which al.
lows more blood to go to the
lung. This removes the blue.
ness and the baby is able' to
get more oxygen into its blood
and to carry on much more
like a, normal child. Several
hundred of these operations
have been done in this country
and elsewhere.- •
In recent years, with the de.
velopment P
of open heart sur.
p
gery, it has become possible to
do' a curative operation. Using
the heart-lung machine, the de.
fects inside the heart can be
completely corrected with re.
latively little risk, the O.M.A.
reports, .
Some babies have this condi-
tion in such a severe form that

Blalock surgery to help' them
live long enough in order to
have the curative surgery.
