I am just writing to tell all girls who have brothers fo love them and appreciate them while they still have the chance. . Two, years ago my brother Ws8 killed in an accident. 1 didn't know it was possible to miss. anyone so much. Every time I see a boy who was my brother's age I have to fight back the tears. Haysom your telephone manager, Well, how does it feel to be 100 years old?.Exhilarating, isn't it, all the celebrations, fun and exciterrten.t marking Centennial Year? I hope 'all of you, had a great July 1 celebra- tion and also that you are able to enjoy many of the special events seemingly going on everywhere _in.the country this year. It almost appears as though Canada and,,Canadians have rediscovered that fun is contagious. It shpuid be a lively, exciting and friendly road towards our 200th year. We in Bell Canada are also celebrating a new milestre this month. Late in June the 5 millionth telephone went 'lite service somewhere in our Quebec or Ontario territory. It hardly seems possible that just Ityr years after we added bur 4 millionth telephone this new record has been set. After all it did take 65"years to reach'the one million mark. From IMO,. when The Bell Telephone Company of Canada was founded, .until April, 1945.` Since then the' "millionth" mile- stones have come with increasing swiftness. Four million telephones in just 22 years. We feel that this rapid. growth of telephones in our territory reflects the vitality and ever- expanding development of the two provinces. For 14 of those 22 years Canadians have held the title of the "world's talk - ingest people". Perhaps that is partly the results of Bell Canada's efforts in helping Canadians. bridge the miles for most of .our country's 100- years. No special celebrations marked the installation of the 5 millionth telephone. In fact, we h -ave no idea which home or office in our territory.can claim the honor. You could be using; it,"however, ifyou had a telephone instal I ed late last month. You may have noticed that for the past several months Telephone News, the , small insert that arrives with your account, has been 'carrying a message abopt the Area Codes _in different parts of •Canada. As you know, Canada and the United States have been divided up into more than 100 Areas, each assigned its own distinct Area Code. Here in Goderich our Area Code is 519. Although someone else in another community on the'Continent may have the same telephone number a's you, when, your number is prefixed by your Area 4od6aiit becomes unique ovgs,,,t:Fle entire telephone network. „ Using. the ),$rea Code when'''Vou call: Long Distance speeds your messages easily across the miles. For instancd, where Direct Distance Dialing is available, you can dial your own . .Long Distance catls.'Where calls must be -placed through an Operator, giving her the Area Code as well as the distant number helps her to speed your dalt. The front pages of your telephone directory contain Area Codes for many .places on the continent. .. boy and. satyr• "Here's another can. Now stop- fighting," The sister answers, "Thanks, Mom, but we could do. with ane less brother." Whenever I see that commercial I say tight outloud "If you s1 ould evez'lose1your brother, as 1 did, you Will eat your words." I hope all girls who have broe ' thers will treat them better, while they still have the chance, I'd give anything if I could' tell my brother just 'once 'how much I loved him. J,JONELY SISTER Dear Lonely: Here's your letter and I hope it makes a dent. It could well have been written by a boy who misses his sister. This train runs both ways. Dear Ann Landers: ,Last year I was dating a wonderful girl. Things were going Ane until 1 Cheated on her and lied about it. We had an argument and broke up. 'When„ she married someone else five months later Ithought I'd die. I hear rumorS that she and her husband .are .not getting along and-there'is ,talk of sepal ration. My problem, is this: I miss her like crazy. I have been going through the motions of irlfriend Okays TV Cable (continued from page 1) was readily given by council. A letter from Mrs. Elaine MacIver of town claiming costs to purchase a new bicycle to replace one owned .by yBillie. MacIver,•which was wrecked in an accident occurring during the,; boys' bicycle race of Mon. day, July 3, was tabled.. The claim was referred to an in. suranc,e agency with which the corporation of the town of God. erich is insured. The claim was based , on the fact that - the races did not receive pro. per police supervision. Under the agenda, "reports of standing committees", chair. man of the special committee, , Councillor R. C. Hays laid be. fore council a report based on two matters previously refer. red to it. A study of present bylaws regarding - methods of dog -catching was the first item of the - :report; second wasa study made of anti -noise by- laws, their definition and en. fbrcement. Council approved first sec- tion of the report recommending that the present system of dog - catching, control and licensing be retained. Second section of the report, recommending that council establish `stiffer bylaws to control excessive noisewith. in the town , was defeated -after . council split the report into two'separate articles. ' Under the section, "tuzfinish. ed business", council heard a report from chairman of pro. perty committee, Bruce How- 'lett, ow-'lett, that litre' siteswere being• studied for • 'accomodation of housing projects. One of the housing projects is a senior W.J. Denomme FLOWER SHOP. q Phone SU 8132 citizens' dwelling unit and the other project is. for low rental housing construction. The sites will ` be inspected shortly by Ontario Housing Corporation officials. ti Following, this matter, the Mayor reported that he had been informed that Goderich El- evator l•evator and Transit company were planning to put more grain storage vessels in the harbor. Council members, on thewhole, opposed' this action by the God. erich elevator coirnaanv. It was thought that the barges already in the harbor at the north dock presently being used by this company, for grain storage, were creating a very unattrac- 'tive harbor scene. Small:plea. sure craft, it was believed, . were avoiding Goderich marine facilities for this reason. , , -A letter written by Mayor' Dr. G, F. Mills to Federal. minister of transport J. W. Pickersgill, which outlined the town council's reasons for op. . posing this plan, was read by Clerk -treasurer, S, H. Blake. The- letter stated that if the Goderich Elevator company re. quired more grain storage fa.c ilities, it would be more • in the best interests of the town . - if the said' company were to build -additional elevators; A meeting to be held at the ear- liest possible date between re. presentatives of federal trans- port and members of town coun- cil was requested. It was moved, seconded and passed unanimously by coun., cil that the Mayor's letter to Federal transport' minister Pickersgill be endorsed. Following this motion,. meet- ing adjourned. Your husband has been having too much fun lately." Another card signed, "The Gang at the -Office"' went something like this: "Quit loafing and "get back, to work, We're tired of carrying , your load." ' Then, there are cards so ob. scene - that one wonders if it At this point in the council session, Elmer Jenkins, one• of the signers of the petition re. questing that the council order removal •of the, snowfence at Agricultural Park, was given an opportunity to speak. Mr. Jenkins stated that the snowfence in its present loco:. tion and condition was creating an eyesore in front of the pro. perty belonging to the several residents who -lived on the op. posite side of the streets along which the fence had been er- ected. The snowfence,.. installed by a committee of Goderich Trot. ting Association members, Was -- put there with the intentions of keeping the crowd from watching the races from their cars. Councillor W. Sheardown, who opposed the petition and was in favor of letting the snowfence remain • as it was, asked Mr. Jenkins. if the pet.: itioners he represented would not consider letting the fence stay put for the present seat son.until another year when the grounds could be blocked Brom view, by - some material less objectionable 'or, failing that, the snowfence could eventually" be painted white td make. it less unsightly. To this +request, Mr. Jen. kins countered, "How'd you like it if it •were in front of your house?" Councillor Sheardown made ne - further - comment at- that moment. After more discussion Councillor B. R. Robinson made a motion that the matter be referred to finance committee chairman, W. Schaefer, and the motion carried. The ma Jori. of council expressed views . posing_ the . snowfence along Eldon and Blake streets. , Following this motion coup. cil reverted - to committee -'of the whole, Arising from this_ discussion was a recommend.. ation that town council engage_ the department of public works to survey the property at the north side of the Maitland river breakwall to determine bounds. . ries .of , federal and privatd property in that vicinity. • Dodgers Win And Lose Last Wednesday night the -fans saw Goderich gals win another ball game behind the pitching of Addie Graham to a 10-2 victory over Brucefield, Norma Walters who is having a good year, had four•.hits and scored three runs, which helped the Dodgers to thneir victory.
