A German scientist has invented a method whereby petroleum and similar. liquid hydo carbons can be rendered non -explosive. This is accomplished by adding to the petroleum:. small quant- ities of a compound made up as follows 92.81 per cent. chloride of sodium, 2.77 percent. bi carbonic of sodium, 184 per cent sal ammoniac, 1.14 per cent. water 22 per cent."; sulphate of magnesia,' .92 per cent. sulphate of lime and .8 .per, cent of analine. It is said that the use of this compound not only renders the oil nonexplosive but makes the light more agreeable, New Telephones. M. Mercadier, one of the Directors of the Paris Ecole Polytechnique, has in- vented a telephone of reduced size, which is said to bre more efficient in every way, than the ordinary instru- ment now in use. It is called the "Bi telephone," and has been tested success fully between Paris and London. . The Inventor has also Made light receptors, which can reach the ears without be- ing: held. This will be of treat utility to persons who have to take notes at the telephone. An infantry officers, Captain Charollois, has also invented a bimetallic telephone which obviates the use of insulators.
