Maitland Pro's Tips
BY BOB -DEORSKEN
Some mere words for the
gals:•
The large majority of women
who play golf don't,swing at the
ball hard enough.
They have the• strength to
swing harder but they have been
told time and time again that
easy does it, so they swing with
the daintiness of Dresden
shepherdesses. -
The good women professionals
bang the ball out there, just like
the best men, but most women
couldn't swing hard enough
even if they wanted to, because
they aren't set for it. ,
' Whether from 'inherent
modesty, conscious worry about
her skirt or restrictive founda-
tion' garment% the - average
woman doesn't . take a, ,wide
enough stance to be able to cut
loose with, a good swing at the
ball,.
• Remember, it's really easier
to swing well when you set
yourself firmly and put smite
vigour into the swing. if you
slow down your swing artifici=
ally, the clubhead will waver
off line.
• Of course it is wrong to hit
with the hands and press for
distance, but to take a ' gbod-
firm, rhythmic cut at ' the • ball
-opeas the door for easier and
better golf for women golfers.

River Boat Story
Water Testers
There may be a parallel be-
tween the life of 1luckleberry.
Finn and the lives of three On-
tario Water Resources Commis-
sion ' employees, who, like
Samuel Clemens, live in a
world dominated by a river.
Huck had his Mississippi, but
Tony Kunopaski, John Sawarna,
both of Toronto and Walter
Fox of Kingsville, really have
two rivers, the Detroit and St.
Clair. They have been travelling
them since April, taking samples
in connection with the OWRC's
intensive two-year program to
tabulate the quantity and type
of industrial, domestic and sur-
face, pollution from Ontario
whih reaches the bordering
Great Lakes, and the effect
these discharges have on the
lakes' quality.
Here the parallel ends. Huck-
leberry Finn may have had
time, to fish, but it is all work
for the OWRC men from the
time they board their 30 -foot
boat, the "Pelican," until they
tie up for the night. It is their
job to collect water samples at
pre -determined points or "sta-
tions" in the rivers, then do a
preliminary analysis on them.
Walter Fox, theoperator,
must locate the stations and
hold the Pelican on them until
Crew Chilf Kunopaski and
"second mate" Sawarna have
completed the sampling opera-
tion, carried out by means of
a special sampling device, which
can cbliect water from any spe-
cific, depth. In deeper- water,
a sample is taken five feet from
the, surface, five feet from the
bottom and half way between.
While the Pelican heads for
the next sampling point,- Tony
and John head "back aft" where
they conduct tests for dissolved
oxygen, ph and alkalinity. The
ten work,' quickly. To avoid
confusion,' it is c best to finish
these tests before the next sta-
tion is reached, and.a new set
of samples is collected.
Results of the shipboard tests
are 'entered on a special "deck
sheet," and at day's end the
boat is met at port by' a driver,
who takes the samples to a
laboratory in London for further
analysis. Results of all tests will
be fed into a computer in To-
ronto for. further examination.
Over 50 samples have been
collected in a single day, but
the usual "catch" for the Peli-
can is under this number, de -
pending on the weather and
location of. - the sampling ata,
tions.
Unlike crews on the two 1arg-
er OWBC vessels, on lakes Erie
and Ontario, the Pelican's crew
sleeps ashore, an advantage fully,

said one crew member. "When

just ,tie up and walk away from
then river." -'1141s is ,true, but' when you
hear the smen talk, you realize
they never completely forget
about tine rivers, the home
and the industries, along
their banks, and the work
they, are doing to protect the
duality of these two great
waterways.
The Pelican is scheduled to
work until October, and in that
time it will probably travel
along the Ontario shore of Lake
Huron, and may even be used
in twoupcoming studies of the
St. Marys River, which flows
by Sault 'Ste. Marie. However,
for the next two years .._ is
"home" will be the Detroit and
St. Clair„ rivers.
Like Samuel Clemens and the
Mississippi, the crew will bed
left with many memories of this
area.
