Energy and Resources Manage- ment ” Minister Simonett said Monday that levels began rising sharply last August and are still mounting. He said r_sing water levels are general throughout the• Great Lakes and Georgian Baay, but are especially evident at the eastern end c,f Lake Ontario where the level is up two feet from last August and is expect; ed to climb another 18 inches during the next six weeks. The minister told the legis- lature _ during ,discussion of his 1966-67 spending • estimates: "Water `-level., -zrr- . t'he Great Lakes have recovered and we will perhaps he worrying about high water before this season is out." Outside the House, Mr. Sim- onett said_ no flooding is antici- pated but there is danger of renewed shoreline erosion. from high water. The lake wafer levels reached their . owest ebb in the summer of 1964 when many tourist re- sorts and boating centra 'a oth pleasure and commercial ere left h;gh and dry.as the water receded to as much as three feet below normal. =: The row levels were estimated to have caused losses in millions of dollars to Ontario's economy that year.. Mr. Simonett said the :.lake levels now appear to be enter- ing_another h..gh._cycle. :in their continuous fluctuation.
