Auto Strikes Tree,
Goderich Boy Dies
Gerald McCormick Fritzley,
20, of 99 Park St., Goderich,
died in Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital yesterday:
after the car he was driving.
smashed into a tree beside
Highway 21, six miles north
of Goderich.
A passenger in the car,
Gary Keene, 19, of 1$ Victoria
St. S., is in Alexandra hospital
with a fractured skull. His
, condition was listed as seri-
ous. -
Police said the car was
travelling south wherf it veer-
ed off the highway and slam-
med into a tree in front of the
farm of Horace.. Crawford.
v The car wrapped around
the tree arid 'a tractor was
used to move it so Gerald
could be moved from the
wreck.
Gary was thrown part way
through the rear window of
the vehicle.

the, United Brotherhood of
Carpenters and Joiners of
America were still meeting '
at -press time yesterday.
The meeting was held in the
Hotel Bedford at the request`
of conciliation officer Jack
Sperazini who was sent by
the department of labor.
The sessions started at
10:30 a.m,, broke off for lunch
and resumed at 2 p.m.
L. E. Elliott, secretary of
Goderich Manufacturing, said
there was no announcement to
make about the negotiations.

Negotiatioes for a new con-
tract started --in August, 1965,.
and ended March 8. Members
of the local walked' off .their
jobs at that time.

returned to work last week
at the behest of the company
which is reported in limited

Yesterday was the first-time
since April -5 that ,the two
sides have rnet. On. that date
they . held a meeting with

lington in London.

Goderich District Collegiate

An inquest is expected to
be held, but no date has been

curane; S.S. 5, Hullett 'a'hd for
the past 18 years -had been ,
on the _staff of the Hamilton
Beard`of Education: -
. She . was a member of the
--MacNabb Presbyterian, Chu-
rch, Hamilton, where she was
active in the W.M.S.
Besides her parents and sis-
ter Jean, she is survived by
another. sister,: Miss' Frances
E. Hcuston, at home. She was
• .predeceased .by one'ebrother,
James, who died on - active
service in 1943. The funeral.
was- held on Tuesday after-
noon with burial ,taking place
in Colborne cemetery.

for the Tuckersmith Muni-
cipal Telephone System which
converted to dial operation .
last weekend.
She was recalling some of
the exciting moments at the
Bayfield switchboard prior to
the conver"sici;.
"That was the most excit-
ing," she said: "Brit it' was
only the garage."
Trigger Alarm

Now if fire calls are a "shot
line', operation, the 279 sub-
scribers can dial the fire
number. It places a call to one
of six red telephones in the
home of a fireman, and the
Bayfield smoke eaters are on
the way.
Since March ' 17, 1949, the
switchboard has ,been in • a
room in the home of Mrs.
Malcolm Toms, and Mrs..Toms
has been an operator all.that
time.

During the past several
weeks Mrs. Francis has been
visiting Tuckersmith subscrib-
ers explaining the dial opera -
lion. Some she called by
phone.
Her instruction must have ,
been thorough since only" two •
persons attended a public in-
struction session on May 9.
"There was a lot said they
Would go, but they didn't

show lap," said •Mrs. Francis.
"We've had a lot, of excit-
ing • moments," ,said Mrs.
Toms. "At least at the time
they seemed exciting."
One day the• switchboard
went completely dead and
Mrs. Toms drove to Bruce -
field to contact serviceman
Wally MoBeth.
Seeking Help
"We've had calls for help,
too,' she said. "You don't re-
member then after it's done;
you are just glad to do it."
With the passing of per-
sonai service of this nature
and the crank -type telephones,
Mrs. Torus has an empty room
in her home where the switch-
board used to stand.
"I'm going 'to drake a little
power room or sewing
room." she sa.d.
"But I'm going to miss the
company of the girls mostly;'"•
said Mrs. Toms.
And . we are going to miss
you, too," said Mrs. Francis.

Area Animals Seized

The third raid` in Huron
County since -February was

Humane Society lastweek:
The society seized 42 head
of cattle in two raids, one on
a' Blyth area farm and .other
near Ilolyr(,od• in Bruce -
County.
Provincial police and Syd-

the farm to investigate com-

creasing its - investigations

Given Jewels
.Twenty-year jewels were
presented to six members of
Goderich Rebekah Lodge at
its 57th anniversary meeting
Tuesday night.
At a previous meeting a
25 -year jewel was given to
Mrs. Reg McGee, who was
leaving for Europe.
Those receiving the 20 -year
jewel were Mis. Ernest Craig,
Mrs, Tom Legg, Mrs. Kenneth
Bell, Mts. Sam McNeil, Mrs.
F. B. Riley, all of Goderich,
and Mrs. Reta Orr, of Sea -
forth. -
The jewels were presented
by District Deputy President
Mrs. Edna Ooldwell of Hen -
sail. Noble Grand Mrs. John

In 1964 council passed` a

the speed limit on these par-
ticular sections from 30 to 40

Goderich, has been charged
with dangerous driving fol-
lowing a two -car accident on
Highway 8 that killed a nine-
year-old Londesboro girl Sat-
urday.
Shine Hesselwood, daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith
Hescelwood bf R.R. 1, 'Londe&
boro, was one of five children
being drives to a drive-in
theatre by a family friend.
Her sister, Brenda, 13,
brother, Kemieth, 11, and two
friends, Jeannette Riley, 12,
daughter 'of Mr. and Mrs.
Alex Riley of R.R. 1, Londes-
boro, and C'ayton Riley, 12,-

Summer -Camp Funds
Huron County Children's Aid, Society wants to send
ime of the children in its care to summer camp this year.

the children would be sent to various church camps in the
county -for a week or 10 days.
"The number of children to' be considered is small, and
the cost,js approximately ,$15 to $20 per 'child,;' said Mrs.

sold his real estate and gen-
eral insurance business and
is moving to Toronto. -

business has been purchased
by Alexander: and Chapman.
Ili 1949, Mr. Croft ,came to
Goderich and established Blue -
water Cleaners which he sold
in•1358 to ent.er the real estate
and .nsurance business.

cil career," said Mr. Croft,

War, Mr. Croft was a member

tank corps which landed in
Europe on "D Day." Ile had
three tanks shot from. -under
him, the last at Falaise where
he was wounded and returned
to Co nada.
He was engineering and
supply officer for ,Goderich
and Huron. County for the
department, of production,
aid was a member of the°
itoy:t' Canadian Legion, Kins-
men and Knights of Oolmu-
'bus.
Mr. Croft worked - for the
department o public works in
the acquisition of land .far„
the Ontario Hospital south of
Goderich and park lands north
of town.
