The Goderich Signal-Star, 1966-03-10, Page 3VAN Fight To . Save Bluebirds By John Hardy A - Four 'years ago the G.D.C,I, Biology Club launched a pro- gram to help. "re-establish the nearly extinct .bluebird in tIi Goderich area. ' Suitable -;nesting -boxes--wer constructed by citlb members and distributed for erection. Though many desirable species of birds used. the nesting facil- ities provided no bluebirds were reported. The following year an increas- ed number.cf boxes were erect- ed in a similar manner, this time at least one pair of the rare birds were obtained. After due consideration of these two years experience it was decided to concentrate the boxes to general areas most likely to attract the bluebird. Two areas were chosen, permis- sion was obtained to erect boxes at the Maitland Falls Conserv- ation Area, aiso.a smallnumber on private lands east of McGaw. No nesting bluebirds were reported In the Falls area but in the McGaw area fourteen young bluebirds were raised in three 'different nesting boxes. Apart from these bluebirds, large numbers of young wrens, swallows, song sparrows and' cb.eatecs were reared in both areas. . -Th't" Y year the eiu'b- -decided' to intensify their efforts, 0t the successful area of previous years. On Saturday -"26th Feb- ruary, club members Gary Bean, Ted Barker, Jane Fisher, Julie Cox, Robbie Prest and Bruee McCreath tinder the direction ofi, president John. Hardy, sallied iarth !trine(' with hammers, nails and nesting 4boxes. The weather co-operated to an ex- tent that' ` a touch of spring could be felt as our core mem- bers biked along the nesting line. After the nailing and tramp- ing was completed the group retreated to the Hardy home. where they warmed themselves with hot chocolate. The club hopes that this year their efforts will be rewarded by a further increase in the bluebird population THEATRE - GODERICH FIRST RUN: FILMS IN AIR CONDITIONED COMFORT: ENTERTAINMENT IS OUR BUSINESS WED., " THURS., FRI, ; MARCH 9-10-11 THE STRANGEST ADVENTURE THE EYES .OF MAN HAVE EVER SEEM.
