VALENTINE "DAY FAGTS
There are many myths about
St. Valentine's Day,' according
to historians but the one most
often quoted and most apt per-
haps, is that of the young priest
named Valentine who divas be-
--breaded -on _February .1.4th, 270
A.D., simply .because he broltght
young lovers together and sec-
retly ' married them, • '
This, the story 'goes,, was' a
crime under the, stern wartime `-
edict of the cruel Emperor
Claudius . who, had forbidden
marriages. It seems that Claud-,
,
ius Hound married men, made
poor soldiers,' 'being .loath" to
leave, their families to go to
war.
Before the soft-hearted Val-
ntine was led =to his death, he
perused a farewell note to his.
;jailer's daughter who had been
kind to him, and signed it "Your
Valentine.
Seems fitting that for almost
seventeen hundred years,, the
sainted Valentine has.. been hon-
oured by lovers --and all good.
friends too—by the sending, of
gay, demure,endearing, cheer
ing or jesting cards, `'on Febru-
ary 14. According to a fore-
cast over 30 ' million valentines
will be bought and sent by Can-
adi4R' this -year.
SAINT VALENTINE EN-
SHRINED
The spirit of Saint Valentine,
the "Lover's Saint" who was
beaten and beheaded on Febru- '
.ary 14th, 270 A.D. seems to
have survived through almost
seventeen centuries.
His actual remains are said .
to be ,preserved in the- Church
of St. Praxedes at Rome, where
a gate (now Porta des Popola)
was' formerly named for him—
"Porta ,,Valentina."
