The play, with- its soggy dumpling -t% -pe .plot, ,would 'have been difficult enough for many leading professional groups to. make come alive. Fortunately style and enthu iasa, plus some fine direction from Gail Sully, finally won the day for the, players and. ' the audience. At the Saturday night per- formance, the !presence of an adjudicator failed to spur, the actors on through the painfully difficult first act. (Len) Dunkeld, who passed away in that city. Dir. •Dunkeld was a son of the late Alec Dunkeld and was born near Dungannon. He is survived by his wife, the doruner Lila M, Cameron; a son, Rev. In the end, George, now his own master, is Undersecretary- of State. and i.appily in love with Irene. .The force .behind all these m;anoeuverings is Philip Russell, retired Secretary of State.. In this part Bill Cochrane is ex- cellent. He is gay and amus- ing on the Mate, and gives the younger members of the cast the greatest support. His wide, Constance, is played by Virginia Lodge. As always Virginia is a de- light to. watch. •We almost hate we are 'deeply absorbed in the third act when she gives 'up an unequal struggle and ,;,becomes reconciled to Philip. The cast is completed by Adrian Swanton as Byron Wink- ler,' the Secretary of State and Frank Bissett as Laurence the butler. , Spared Nothing Under Gail's direction all the affairs' of state are finally set- tled. She has lavished the ut- most trouble on this play, paint- ed, and designed •t:he -set, , trained, the cast, even made up the .ac- toi•s and has_ spared herself, nothing. Her production supervisor, :bMarjorie Maicfie, is equally re sp•Iri,s.ihle fora smooth running, well dressed play. For "Af- fairs of State" Gail, her cast and her. production staff have all worked like beavers. This play is our entity in the W.O.D.L. Festival and was adjudicated by Mr. Stanley Richards on Sat- urday night.
