The question on. everybody's
lips this week is, "What hap-
pened to the Vikings?" ,
In view of the season's per-
formance, this is probably a
very good question. Actually,
it can be all wrapped up very
easily—a slippery field.
The Vikings' attack was -all
based on speed and running
plays. After a two-day rain
the field was far too slippery to ,
be even thinking of running 1
the type of plays by which the'
-locals had been rolling up big
yardage.
The k
via the aerial route.
The slippery field not only
affected Vikings' offensive game
but also bogged down the ,e -
fence. On a dry day, the light=`
er line of the local school would
have stopped the Wingham
power plays cold, On Wednes-
'day of last week they were
meeting the plays head on but
sliding off and sliding back as
they couldn't make their cleats
hold in the loose mud. •
We can hear the cries of
"excuses, excuses.” Not at all
good sport fans! These are
t olid reasons. I'll give anybody
any odds that Goderich would
'beat Wingham nine times out
of ten on a dry or frozen field
and it would be the opposite
ey plays built around
the fleet hack, 13i11 Wilkinson,
were very ineffective. When
-- 'he -tried • to• make the–turns to.;
..frit his hole, he just slid and
_often went right on his derriere. 1
• There were a couple of oc-
casiops ‘c hen Bill could see day-
light all the way to the end
zone but t.e -turns _ .seere.. just
impossible to make in the mud
of Agricultural Park.
Wingham, • on the other hand,
were running the straight hand-
off type of play and their big,
hefty backs were eating up six,
seven and eight yards on prac-
tically every play. The passing
of the Wingham quarterback
was accurate and this also help-
ed the visitors considerably. We
never did have a real pass at-
tack this year although our
only TD last Wednesday came

on a wet and slippery field.
We believe that we `still have
the true champions. This type
of playoff does not always prove
the best team. Goderich, for
exaYnple, lost one football game
this year, that being to Wing -
ham for the championship.
Wingham lost three games this
year and one of .those was to
Goderich.
