Diary Of A Vagabond
By Dorothy Barker
A NEW LOVE
It is just. a little ship, the
CN's M.V. Bonavista, a cargo
ship with passenger ,service
that ctn.& .its way through the
tlantic Ocean like a hot knife
throyigh butter. It is easy to
fall in love with a ship. I and
my fellow passengers grew
quite attached to her during
the seven days we were abroad.
Being on a working ship is like
belonging to a large family.
Captain Penny and crew were
tolerant, gracious hosts to the
ten travellers who made the
entire voyage from St. John's
to Corner Brook. There were
literally hundreds of others
who came aboard at one out -
port and left at the next, but
we felt we were rather special
for we were with the Bonny.

watched the crew finish loading
chickens, trucks, lunaber, groc-
eries, fish plant equipment and
a myriad of other items, until
the hold and aft deck were
burdened with shipments de-
stined for the outports of New-
foundland and Labrador.
The ship's four first-class
cabins were occupied ,by pas-
sengers from Kansas City, New
York State, Toronto and one
couple from 'St., John's who,
though they had been born and
raised on the island, had never
made the outport trip before.
Below in smaller cabins were
families travelling with broods
of children, school teachers, a
lighthouse keeper and his fam-
ily returning to his isolated
watch for another two years'
stint after' a month's holiday.

It would be trite to describe
these outports as quaint. In

Solemn Citizens
These outport people, unlike
citizens in the two large- cities
of St. John's and Corner Brook,
seldom smile, are shy and sol-
emn .among strangers. They
have a fascinating manner of
speech that sounds as foreign
as an Ethnic language until one
becomes accustomed to their
rapid patter and the way they
slur their vowels. As the boat
ties up at the pier they stand
in groups, gazing at the ship
without uttering a word. Some-
times the teenage boys push
one another playfully or the
young girls titter and smile

carton is on the dock, or trans-

Then.' they- solenjnly turn their
backs on the boat and much
more slowly than they arrived,
return to their little homes. At
many of the outports, young-
sters and adolescents swarm
aboard the ship in droves.

The longest arid most unique
feud in histdry' was between
Oxford university and a certain
Henry Symeonis (Simmons). For
six hundred years, all under-
graduates at Oxford aspiring
to a B.A. degree were -forced,
before the degree was granted,

consent to allowing Symeonis
"to reside peaceably" in the
city of Oxford. The feud had
its beginning in 1242, approx-
imately, when Symeonis, in the
first historic "town and gown"
row, kilted a student and fled
into exile. ,For six centuries
thereafter the university de-
manded of prospective baccal-
aureates that they swear to
keep Henry Symeonis ,out of
Oxford. It is not recorded whe-
ther or not his ghost tried to
re-enter the city after his
death.
