Because we plan to attend
a convention at a swank spot
next- week, that _ancient and
bonorakrte lament, "l_haven't a
thing to wear!" reared its hoary
head. This gave birth to the -
inevitable twins: a visit to the
bank manager and a trip to
the city.
The 'latter, in turn. demand-

Th' only -show in town was
a "brilliant" British revue call-

from rave reviews in New
York. It stahk.
That may not be quite the
cultured way in which to review
a show but it is an honest
opinion. The critics probably'

Just to ;..make a proper mish-
mash of the excursion, my wife,
who was supposed to be shop-

summer clothes, came back to
the hotel with nothing' pur-
chased but a winter coat which
she. couldn't resist.
Things were a little brighter
on the weekend, when we took
a flyer to the Stratford Festival,
that peculiar ,Canadian monu-

reverence, beam with pride,
and point with honest' indigna-
tion when people say, "Ah, you
Canadians got no culture."

Ten, years ago, when the fes-

Lifelike Snakes
Made of Rubber
A collection of snakes com-
mon to Ontario again will be
the focus of the attention of
thousands at the Canadian Na-
tional Exhibition. • The snakes
are among numerous wildlife
features in the Department of
Lands and Forests exhibit in the
attractive open air central
court of the Ontario Govern-
ment Building just inside the
Bufferin Gates. -
In a glassed -in panoramic set-
ting, the collection . affords close
study of types, sizes . and dis-
tinguishing color markings ---
without qualms. For these life-
Iike specimens are made of
-latex, but true to the 'ori
eep the
wriggle! -
Largest Snake'
The fox snake is the largest
in the exhibit. This species is
docile and not venomous but
is sometimes mistaken _for_ a_
rattlesnake. The massassauga
rattlesnakes also is on odisplay
along with such others as: the
ring-necked snake, s m o o t h
green snake, little brown snake,
red -bellied -snake, garter. snake,
hog -nosed • snake, milk snake
and water snake. The 'species
are all distinctively marked and
are• harmless.
It is felt that the interest and
study which the snake ' exhibit
attracts tends to better under-
standing and appreciation of
one of the most interesting
forms of Ontario wildlife.

Dear Driver:
TODAY, MY DAUGHTER, who is 5 years old, start-
ed to .school for the first time. Her brother was with
cher, but he's only 9 himself, and still looks pretty little
to me. i Their • Cocker 'Spaniel, whose name is Scott, sat
on the front porch"and whined his canine belief in the
folly of education as they waved "goodby" and start-
ed off to -the halls of lPa_rn-ixs-.---
LAST NIGHT WE TALKED ABOUT SCHOOL
My daughter and I. She wondered what the teacher
would be like . .. she hdipe , she could. sit beside Mary
(the little 'girl, uext door). She said her letters for
"me — just to be sure" she knew them. Oh, we talked
about 'a lot of things — tremendously vital — unimpor-
taut things. nr

'SHE LOOKED SO HELPLESS — sound asleep,
with "Princess Elizabeth" (that's her doll) cuddled in
her right arm. You see -I'm. her dad. Wheri her doll
is broken or her finger is cut, or ,her head gets banged,
I can fix it — but when she and Brother start to school,
when they walk across the street, then you -^>have the.
responsibility too.
. _ THEY'RE NICE .CHILDREN,. _both ..of. them. .They...
like to ride horses and swim and hike with me. But I
can't be with them all the time. I have to work to pay
for -their clothes and education. So please help me look
'out ..for them. Please -drive slowly est the schools and
intersections — and .please remember that children do
run from behind parked ears.
PLEASE DON'T HURT MY CHILDREN'.
