In the Montreal Gazette of Tuesday
last appears the following :
Oa the 24th ultimo there appeared iu
the Gazette a letter signed '°t';x•luron-
ite," inking if Mr. M. C. Cameron, M.P.,
was the than who, in the days when the
Liberals undertook to elevate the standard
of public morality, spent $2f,,00J eorrupt-
ing his constituents, was unseated and
disqualified and ,afterwards whitewashed
by the llackeuzie Uoverument.--and con-
cluding with the assertion that, if Mr,
Omicron was this man, a more corrupt
man does not disgrace the House of Com-
mons. Asa matter of fact, it has not
been established that Mr. Cameron spent
$20,000 corrupting his constituents ; he
has not been disqualified. and, of course,
didnot need to be whitewashed. Tho ex-
pressed ilelief that he is 'ono of the most
corrupt men in the Hoist of Commons,'
was, also, of course, uncalled for."
No, not in just that shape. For in-
stance, the amount, $20,000, is perhaps
a trifle high. If we aro not astray in
the ileums, it was about $12,000 that
was shown in the election court to have
been spent in South Huron elevating
the standard of purity on behalf of Mr.
Cameron. Then, ho was NOT disquali-
fied, but the .fudge in the appeal court,
in confirming the decision of the lower
court, which tuasosted our friend, said
something like this : "If the court be-
low had held the respondent guilty of
personal bribery in this case, this court
would certainly not have interfered
with that finding," As to the closing
assertion of "Ex-Huronite," that is
probably a matter on which opinions
differ. Possibly the writer never lived
in Huron, but he seems to have heard
of M. C. Cameron, Q. C., M. P.—God-
erich Star.
