The Goderich Signal-Star, 1962-11-01, Page 139 FOR A GREENER THUMS By di MacLeod Ross An Unusual Year The past year has been a most unusual one in the garden for inost people and the fall of wet snow on October 25th last only served to emphasize the point. The combination of heavy mew on trees arid shrubs still m full leaf was disastrous. In this garden, a smeke bush was sprayed in all directions, a mulberry lost half its branches, while lilacs and locust trees were snapped off. The aponeadies, began with the early. burst of hot Weather from Mae, the 13th to 23rd yvhen terppee. atures reached the 80's on sev- eral days and even hit an 89 on May the 17th. The remelt of this Warm spell was to bring on the roses unduly soon, 'so much so that several people wondered whether they would have any bloom at all left for the Jane 23rd flower show. In previous years it has often been a question of whether to choose a later date for this show. How- ever, as always happens, just as many were unaffected as ingly high standard of show was the result: As far as this garden was coneerned black spot was non existent, but in its place came another fungus disease which Call our number and we'll - show you the 0oal of every is right in front of you. It ig less work and sensible economy, too, to have us do your cleaning. The time, fabor and money saved and the possible accidents avoid- ed is worth many times more than. our moderate charges. dGODERICH Frenc DRY CLEANERS W. D. WILSON, Prop. WEST JA 4-3452 made it necessary to defoliate complete bushes in sonie 'eases. Conseltetion of .the reference books led to the belief that this Was "rust." Howexer, refererice to QA.S. brought an expression of surprise -that black -spot should /lave been controlled but not "rust." Later on; when affected leaves were shown to Mr. Hartnoll, he suggested leek of phosphates° in the soil. In the result, the only cure was and has been defoliation of all affected stems, after which they immediately sprouted end heve since bloomed. The conditions alsd .brought ,out a new variety of bug led for the .first time some slugs have been found. Taking stock of some of the experiments which were indulg- ed in, 'the use of black poly sheet tol-obviate the necessity for weeding paths was'an un- qualified -succeSs. Much labor .was saved and not a weed ma- tured., Several purchases from the society's auction sale have done well. For example, Gaz- anias, grown by Mr. Reg Bell from seed, have given numerous richly colored yellow and orange blooms and the plants have now been taken inside where they continue to provide eolor. A small Korean chrysanthemum has also prospered and is now a large plant covered with daisylike flowers of an orange hue. The Gerbera,'another Bell -seedling, on the other hand has remained static all summer and failed to flower. It too has been breught indoors where it is producing a new leaf with much _deliberation. .„ There are always aknumber of negative lessons.' Lilies of the Auratum Speciosum type—Gold Band and Milan Wallace, in their • second and third years., in one spot were poor per formers. It seems desirable to take. them up Miter a couple of years" and them all over again in a new location rigor- ously prepared with humus and above ell good drainage. The more expensive the lily Milli the quicker it rots if not well drained. Another rather super- fluous negative lesson was that tubrous begonias do not per- form when set in soil" Which resembles pseudo concrete. Ordered in good faith and de- livered in bad, its resemblance to cement moiler was not' real- ized till too late. It is- a great mistake to believe that begon- ias do well in full shade. This .merely causes them to become lanky, a failing it is easy to ;kart if the corms are not given full light before they are put eut in the bed. Lack of sun hours can be the cause of lanki- ness in geraniums toO' and white on this subject,' it is not too late to take cuttings. There are a hUndred and one ways to induce roots but an' easy one is to put the sheik cut just be- low a bud, into a glass of vermi• culite and water. The- recent snow has put paid to the plants Amemni. 211C1 Wye 111 ./&-i*,.....1111ww06/1111Mpallah Godench W.I.
