Appointed to the Ontario Water Re=
sources Commission in Jannary,1960, he
established a c6ditable record of service
on that body. 'hist about a year ago —
on November 8, 1961 — he was appointed
to the Cabinet as a Minister without Port-
folio. This led to another opportunity
for Mr. '1laeNaughton to demonstrate his
ability whiehb resulted in his most recent
appointment -- Minister of Highways.
In his iteW post, Mr. lfacNaughton is
entrusted with the piloting of an impor-
tant department which has an estimated.
dollar outlay of $27$,800,000 iii the fiscal
year J962-63. (lnee again, he can be de-
pended upon to do a creditablew servile

MESSAGES
FROM
THE WORD

GOD .AND THE GODS
By Rev. W. J. ten frHoopen,
North Street United Church
God in his activity begins in
the Bible by making 4nown His
name. He reveals Himself.
That is His first work. He gives
His "name" at the disposal of
the people. He calls forth the
Light, separates Light and Dark-
ness. He leads and accompan-
ies His children. He wants to
be "their" God and He lets
Himself be called: "the God of
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob." Hei.
is "not ashamed of them" (Hebr.
11:16). He is the "God of" Is-
rael. This entering into the
human life finds its depth, when
He at last sends His Son. Now,
He. is fully among them, with
them and near them. We do
not heed to seek Him far away,
neither in heaven, nor at the
other side of the sea (Deut.
30:12-13). At Pentecost is the
completion of the Word becori't-
ing" flesh, because there it is
evident, that the flesh remains
the Word, completely and uni-
versally, "very near you, in thy
mouth and, in thy heart" (14).
This God is preached by the
prophets and apostles. In the
preaching and the sacraments
God is a reality. Now idolatry
is to possess something else or
think up something else in
stead of or beside the only God.
The projections of man's think-
ing 'gives him: the ideal of
vitality, of fertility, of youth;
the heroism of sport-heros and
heroines, the theater and . TV
figures. The superiority of 'race
over against race, which _came
to an end in Germany, but con-
tinues somewhere else. History
and technology, economic pros-

Christ, in whose service we
stand. Anyone who las this
positive faith knows of a joy
and fulfilment, which makes
all these other powers ridicul
ous; the superstitious worship
of astrological horoscopes, of
spiritualistic seances, of chain -
letters, which mustbring luck, -
of lucky objects, ofwonder-
cures and people who wrought
wonders, of black (-letter) days,
ill fated years or unfortunate
numbers.
It was Paul, the Apostle, who
moved; about in his time with a
quietness and trust in the midst
of the powers of emperors and
governors, of sickness and hun-
ger and danger. Not the world-
ly powers, nor force has the
last word, but He, who sits upon
the throne, says: "See, I make
all things new" (Rev. 21:5-6).
Therefore, it means liberty
when we serve Him in Whom
the fulness of God appeared.
Man lives in slavery until he
has met Him; Slavery to the
powers of this world, within and
outside him. But through
Christ man is made free. "For,
brethren, you have been called
unto liberty; only use not lib-
erty for an occasion of the
flesh, but by love serve
another" (Gal. 5:13).
