colonel of -the Fourth Regiment
of Huron from, 1853.) -
Dr. Morgan Hamiiltor, Irish-
born Goderich physician, was
probably the only one of his
profession in the town's early
years. An old directory 'lists
him as deputy clerk of the
Crown, and he was one of the
leading laymen of St. George's
Anglican Church. William ' Cay -
ley must have been a close
friend;• it is Dr. Hamilton's de-
scendants who bear the Cayley
name.

and had nine children. A son
born two months before the
father died in 1858 was chris.

appears in the newspaper re-
port of a public, address by
Hon. M. C. Cameron, of Gode-
rich, taking office as lieutenant -
governor of the ,,Northwest Ter-

Regina: "1 am amazed at the
changes that have taken place

travelled for 100, miles with my
'young friend, Mr. Cayley Ham-
ilton, and two; others without

Hon William Cayley , stood

the Hamilton children. So far
as .known, he * did not bestow
the name Hamilton upon any

matic staff. He was called to
the Bar in England, came to
Canada about 1886 and was
called -oto the Bar of Upper Can-
ada in 1838. Though as a cab-
inet minister he probably had a
residence in Toronto, where
Parliament met some "of: the
time, he must have -been in
Goderich a , great deal. The
town has a Caley street, spelled
correctly 'with a "y” on the
master plan h the town hall:

In 1841, Dr. William Dunlop
of Gairbraid was a candidate
for Parliament, being opposed
by Themes McGill Strachan, a
Goderich lawyer. A protest fol-
lowed the election, ° and Dr:,
Dunlop • was declared member,
but later he was appointed sup-
erintendent of canals and suc-
ceeded by William Cayley, who
defeated Squire Longworth and
so ° represented. the United
Counties of Hurn, Perth and
Bruce. Ir 1851, Cayley was
defeated by Malcolm Cameron,
previously active in ' Lambton
politica and Sarnia's most prom-
inent citizen. This was the
last contest' for the United
Counties, 'Perth being establish,
ed separately. °
