At some point in the ted- ium of going to school a teacher asked me one day before Christ- mas holidays if I would like to take home a book to read dur- ing the holiday season. More to please her than anything, be- cause my heart was set on skat- ing and sleighriding during holiday time, I agreed and she handed me Captain's Courag- eous. The book stayed with my forgotten portunity to rent books or takeschool books and In the winter -locked fastness of a rural concession in On- tario I had a nagging desire for books. At that timejmoks were not considered to be of para- mount importance to the major- ity •of rural residents. How times have changed! Now you find raeks of pocket books in the, drug store, the billiard parlor and the lobby of the hotel. We were triilt winterlocked and mother with true wonuoVa instinct started to bake bread. The front parlor, normally opened in wintertime for fes- tive occasions or a Sunday evening, was pressed into ser- vice with a roaring fire in the beater. Bored of peering into the stereopticon I picked up the book and suddenly a new world seemed to open up. . - * * * There were plenty of things in that book that my mind couldn't comprehend and while my father, as a, landlubber, wasn't of much use in inter- preting, grandfather supplied the details. When I re -read the book a good many, years later I realized that his imagin- ation had supplied a great many erroneous details. That book unlocked the door for me. I must have read it three or four times during the Christmas holida.,LThenI w-efiriliearch-61 more reading material. Our library was lim- ited to a Bible, a copy of Nome Veterinary Remedies, Lives Of The Saints arld a pictorial his- tory of World War I, which I had looked at many times with- out reading the text. As I realize it now, the teach- er was delighted when I went back to school thirsting for more reading adventure. She gave me a col* of Black Beauty and then I 'ran afoul of some of the old prejudices that existed about reading. When I was supposed to be doing chores I was reading. It didn't matter if the room was cold. I didn't notice it. There was a general agreement that I was reading too much arid would ruin my eyes. The book was placed on the clock shelf and 1 was sent to. bed in the evening. It was a long time to wait until the house had settled down and then by the dim light of the turned -don lamp in the the hallway I woe ld creep down the creaky stairs and take the book back up to bed. Un- der the covers with a candle I finished Black Beauty, and it's a wonder I didn't burn the house down. * 4. * My uncle, the storekeeper, had a liking for books and I discovered. he had quite a stock of them. This was treasure in- deed and my strongest mem- ories concern a book called Cast Up By The Sea. It was many ,years before I could disabuse myself of the idea that the South Sea 'natives could smell intruders for miles away. When it became apparent that, like an alcoholic who can always find a supply of spirits, I could /find books, there was a great deal more tolerance shown to me. ' To my , amaze- ment I received' three books for Christrrias. My uncle gave me an. There was some doubt about the Edgar Wallace book being suitable for my tender years. Father picked it up as I was going to bed on Christmas night. Immersed by candle- light in the Green Gables book I realized it was midnight by the chiming of the clock. It was then I heard father climb- ing the stairs to bed. It was the first time, outside 'of an emerg- ency, I had .ever heard him de- viate from his regular bedtime of 9.30. he read' very well. This was a new adventure. It was fun to curl up in the arm chair beside the kitchen range and watch the characters come alive .in' the curling flames that could be seen throdgh the open damper. Come alive they did and I can still feel the salt of tears as he read about Little Nell. Vicar- iously I followed David Copper - field. Even grandpa, who at k'st pretended not to pay any at- tention, would let the pipe go out and the ashes slither down his vest, -and you could hear him muttering dire threats at some of the villians who luiked in the shadows of that kitchen at night when the wind strain- ed through the pine boughs on the west side of the house or rattled a storm window at an eerie spot in the story. 4 * , Somehow books started com- ing to our home after that. My aunt would save me book sections from weekly, papers and I read everything I could get my hands on.. I found that father, in place of spending Sunday afternoon on the sofa, would .be reading, and my mo- ther darning a sock one even- ing asked him to read aloud. , He -cleared his throat and Stammered -,sbOot not reading very well but he started at the beginning of §ilas Marner -and * rb * Books in our isolation came to be a link with another world of imagination.
