The, millinery class has arous- ed much interest with 44 ladies taking part, It was decided to have a Spring luncheon, March 29th, to show the results of the class. The third meal, with the leaders, Mrs. Wilmer Hardy and Mrs. Lloyd Young along with Mrs. Ralph Jewell, are to be a committee to make plans. Mrs. R. Moore and Mrs. T. Lamb are (to plan ae arrangement. from the millinery class, and Mrs. E. Pfrimmer is to collect some of the recent hobbies. In the absence of Mrs. T. Clark, Mrs. Ernest Bogie gave an interesting account of "The Order of the Garter" and ex- plained 'its origin. This is the highest Order of British Royalty. She then took the ladies back to school by way of a geography match. Mrs.' R. Buchanan, program convener for the month, intro- duced her guest, Mrs. Leo. A delicious lunch was served by Mrs. Rod Bogie, Mrs. Dave Bean, Mrs. Henry Brindley and Mrs. J. Horton. Rover Flag Pedicated More than 50 Boy Scouts, Cubs and Rovers of the 4th Goderich Scout Group 'attended in a body the morning service at North Street United Church. Rev. W. J. ten Hoopen chose for his text "God, the Church, and Youth." A dedication of the flag of, the Meneset Rover Crew under. their leader, Rover Skip, Ron Bushell was observed °at the close of the service. They did so again in recent years, but this time in having the pav- ilion reconditioned to better ac- commodate picnickers. In 1912, they undertook the upkeep of the restroom for six months. When the Branch was first organized In 1901 the meetings were held at the' homes of the various members. This continu- ed into 1909 when plans were made to hold the meetings in the OddfelIow's Hall. There, the Goderich 'W.I. met . until 1911. When MaeKay Mall was opened, the meetings were transferred to this hall in 1927 and have been held there ever, since. The first Thursday of the month is still the meeting day, as it was 60 years ago. Many different lines of work have been undertaken by this• organization down through the years. In 1905, for example, a benefit oyster supper for the Y,M.C.A. to help to equip rooms and buy uniforms for Boy Scouts was held. Al v,arlous. times, the Branch contributed financial assistance to local hospital building. .In 1906,.the W.I. donated $100 to the I.O.D.E. to buy a kitchen kit. The members held a benefit tea for Miss Haines (a blind patient at the hospital) and the pro- ceeds were $17.20. Donations were sent to the Sick Children's Hospital,` the Huron County's In 1914, a great amount of sewing was done for the needy families of town. In August, 1914, war was declared and the Red Cross work was started by donating $10 to a Hospital Ship. From that day till November 1918 meetings' were held each .eek for sewing and knitting in the basement of Knox Church. Contributions during these war years amounted to $1,592. In 1920, the W.I. gave $75 to the x-ray fund, and in 1921 gave $100 to the hospital building fund. They contributed $25 to help with the Old Home Week celebration and also paid $50 towards the salary of a school nurse until 1924. Help Hospital In _ 1922 ,the gift of a chart table was made to Alexandra Marine and General Hospital. :.bangfit"scale wo55,11155- t't ie school sufferers in the North byend- inginoney donation. They also Aave $201 to the hospital building fund. In 1924, they gave a chair for use in the wo- men's ward at the hospital and also $100 to the building fund. At the opening of the new wing to the hospital in 1925, the W.I: gave a chart table and desk combined; also a . hall settee. In 1926, they bought a $100 Western Canada Flour Mills bond and gave it to the School Board, the interest to be used as prizes for all time. In pre- vious years, books had been given as 'prizes. They bought the stage cur- tains for MacKay Hall and also bought the coal to heat the hall. In 1924, The Women's Insti- tute pioneered the services of a school nurse. They also started musical education in the schools and financed the same. When the music festival was instituted in' Goderich, they provided an annual scholarship for junior piano playing. They also gave a prize to the entrance pupil ob- taining the second highest stand- ing in each oft -the three schools in town. In 1946, the W,I. celebrated the return of the war heroes and heroines ,with a banquet and this was a joyous reunion. .They thanked the ladies for their many gifts and food parcels re- ceived while in the service of their country. On February 27, 1947, a ban- quet was held ip the Masonic Temple to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Women's Institutes.' Mrs. A. They financially donated to the Women's Institute, Child- ren's Aid County Bursary fund, the World Refugee Project in Jamaica, and to help purchase_( the Adelaide Hoodless home at' Stoney Creek. - "1'he have sponsored short courses and 4-1i Clubs for young girls. in 1959, they furnished the nurses' room in the operat- ing unit of the new wing of the hospital.' The Goderich Branch enjoys good co-operation- with the town officials and the local press in all its endeavors. Since good public relations is part of the succbss of any- organization, a tribute is paid to the Founder, the Charter • members, officers and members throughout the years who have gone to higher service. Just as,ain the, past and present, the „future W.I. Members will no doubt leave worthwhile footprints- in the sands of time. ' The Goderich Brapch'of the West Huron Women's Institute has enjoyed many_ educational; musical and entertaining pro- grams during the past 60 years, With their motto, "For Home and Country," a service club such as the Goderich Branch of the W.I. of West Htiron Dis- trict is of great value to any town or community. Swimming and, water safety tests are conducted in this area by the Red, Cross. 6. Handicrafts are taught gratis in military hospitals to veterans by the Red Cross.
