CLINTON, Sept. 1.0.4--9fincials of
Huron Countyenlperance Feder-
ation have strong hopes that
amendments strengthening t h e
Canta Temperance. Act will be
• made before 'a vote is taken on its
pepeal. Proposed changes were
submitted to the Dominion Govern-
ment two years ago by church and
federation representatives, and re-
cently a deputation to Ottawa
pressed for their enactment. At
a rally of Federation workers and
friends in tlhe assembly hall of
Optario Street United Church,
Wednesday evening, it was report-
ed that careful 'consideration was
pros ised by Hon, Henri 'Courte-
manMche, Secretary' of •State, and
Hon. J. W: Monteith, Minister- of
Health and Welfare. Rev. Dr.
Semple,, of 'Egmondville, •chairman
of 'Huron Presbytery, told of re-
ceiving a 'letter from Prime Min-
• liter Diefentbaker to the effect that
he would follow the matter closely
When it came before the 'Cabinet.
The meeting approved a sugges-
• tion by Rev. S. A, Mo•ote, of Gode-
rich, that ,h county organization for
campaign purposes be commenced
at once, A ;five -man general com-
mittee to start organization, in
consultation with the Ontario Tem-
perance Federation, consists of N.
W. Trewartha, Clinton; Elgin Mc-
Kinley, Zurich; R. P. Watson,
Brucefield, and F. R. Howson and
R. H. 'Lloyd, Wingham.
"This will take a lot of work,"
Mr. Howson warned. "Huron has
never lost a' temperance vote. In
a • province -wide ` vote the county
gave one-third 'of the total dry ma-
jority, and I don't think the county
has changed ed much. We can hold,
the C.T.A. even without the 'amend—
ments, but with them we can' do
it easier, Give this committee
$2,000 and we will hold the C.T.A.
A measly $2,000 from the churches
of Huron is' not' much."
A start was made by 'those pre-
sent, who at close of the meeting
placed money on a plate at the
door.
Robert Southcott, of Exeter, re-
ported on the delegation's visit to
Ottawa, and expressed appreciation
of the co-operation of L. E. Cardiff,
M.P. and of .the interest. shown
by the trwb ininisters.
- The proposed amendments, a
preamble staled, were designed to
increase respect fOY the law, to
better enable .enforcement officials
to obtain obedience to it, and to
increase good order and sobriety,
They are as follows:
L That the possession of Unsealed
containers of intoxicating bev-
erages in public places be pro-
hibited. (Except when on the,
way from one legal residence to
another.)
2. That *the copsrunption or pos-
session °of intoxicating bever-
ages brought into the county in
accordance with Part 2 of „ the
Canada Temperance Act, be
limited' to one's residence. ,
3. That the supply to or use of
intoxicants by persons under 21
„ years of age be prohibited.
4. That a right of appeal to a
higher court from the decision
of a magistrate be provided for.
5. That the p•ovision's for sear.•t
warrants .under the Act be ex-
tended to motor vehicles.,
Confirming Mr. Sotttheott's re-
port, Dr. Semple, continued:. "My
argument in all correspondence
was that • we had our amendments
in the hands- of the Government
nearly two years, while the peti-
tion had be,en presented only a
few weeks ago: We were promised
that our proposal • would receive
careful consideration. In any case,
theprocedure doesnot permit a
vote ,in October or November, as
reported recently in the Free Press
and the Globe."
Gordon Manning, Clinton, said
the Act had been four times
amended, once since it came..into
effect in Huron, in all cases with- ,
-out a vote' of theim"p le.
"Our amendments,he added,
"were carefully worked out under
the.guidance of legal minds, and
they. will take care .of the 'weak-
nesses of the C.T.A."
he sooner we throw these
am ndments into the arena of pub-
lic discussion the better,",,mid Mr.
Moote. "I believe they hive great
merit." . gr,

Those of you who can, break
away for a few minutes from -your
search for the mis-printed SeaWay
stamp which is reputed to sell ftrr
several hundred dollars, may take
interest in the following anomaly.
In the past week, a. 21. inch • dia-

sueli as to make two geometrically
perfect half circles. It is hoped
to be able to show a colored slide
of this -sport at an early society
meeting. ' Many of you who feed
birds in your gardens' will have
grown sunflowers planted by birds.
From Grosse Pointe, Michigan,
comes word 'of a sunflower `16 feet,
high, with fifteen 13 -inch diameter
flowers. The plant was , eleven
inches in diameter at the base and
it made all this growth in one
month. The 13 -year-old girl gard-
ener who was responsible for plairt-
ing the single seed, :,has followed
up her success with a gourd, plant-
ed in, a window box. This,
too,
°has grown with such vigor as to
threaten the brick work of the
house. Everyone will be relieved
to know that a parental veto has
now been placed on her trying
her ' very green thumb on any
house, plants,, These two occur-
rences only go to show what an
exciting hobby gardening ran be.
Newer Aids To Gardening
A few years ago the "miracle
growth stirnulan.t," Gibrel, was in-
trodueed on to the market. It is
Splayed on to plants` in ,strengths
which vary with the type of growth
of her .. pecies. It is, therefore,
n,•cessary to prepare the dilution
of this acid in strict accord with
the instructions. It is not recom-
mended for edible crops .but can
be used on roses, herbaceous flow-'
ering plants, house plants, bulbs,
curnrs and tubers, fruit trees, flow-
ering shrubs and ornamental`ever
• greens. More specifically,, it may
be used on annuals .such as ager-
atum, alyssum, asters, calendula,
cosh os,. ; delphinium, marigold,
iYan'y,- phlox, poppy petunia, ver-
bena' ItIlia also be
bCll<L and zinnia,- a. d

used to advantage on, tuberous be-
gonias,. vannas, dahlias, glads. iris`
and peonies. Also on biennials
such as canterburry be°lls, holly
hock and onlupins, sweet peas and
stocks, to mention only a few
'plants to arouse your interest. For
the past . two years, Gibrel has
been tried on carnations and chry-
santhemums, in 'both cases, with
very good results both in respect
to growth,. and flowering, Since
the substance is still in somewhat
of the experimental stage, it would
• be, interesting to hear the experi-
, enceof other members with Gibrel.
