Two of these-i'whalebacks'==•that
Alexander Holley and , the No. 137
—are already-. among ' the winter
fleet at Goderich harbor and it. is
expected that a' third one, the
steamer John 'Ericsson, will join
them in the. near future. This
leaves only one other, the. tanker
Meteor, owned by Cleveland Tank-
ers Inc., an, oil tanker, -which never_

of.the hulls of this type were built.
At one time as many as 41 of this
type of carrier sailed on the Great
Lakes. Now there are only four
and three of them,,no strangers to
Goderich, 'are .owned and ' operated
by the Upper ,l,'akes'and St. Law-
rence Trat porta. jit Comppany.

Fred Landon 'tells the interesting
history of these carriers.

McDougall's own company, the Am-
erican Steel Barge Company, but

Rev. E. J. Dowling, former editor
of the Detroit Marine Historian
and air authority on the history of
these vessels, points out that this
is incorrect, only the upper half
being curved, the 'bottom ' being al-
