After battling gale -force winds
and 20 foot waves, for about 50
hours, the tug, 'Helen M. B. pulled
into Tobermory harbor early Mon-
kiay morning and ended a wide-
spread search for her. The tug,
which has been iC and out of
G:oderich harbor all summer long
in connection with dredging oper-
ations '"here, left Goderlch about
10 a.m. Saturday bound for Mid-
land'
Members of the crew, who were
the object of a search' by air and
surface craft, said 'their steering
mechanism broke down and the
boat drifted helplessly until the
storm abated on the Lake Huron
side. Crewmen estimated they
were 25 miles off Cove Island when
the storm let up and they were
able to chart their course from
there.
Helmsman Clifford Latondrees
said ' he spent 51 hours at 'the
wheel with only three hours sleep.
He -stated that the tug, at times
"bounced around like a.cork." ,Sec-
ond Engineer Cecil Swain, of Owen
Sound., said the storm was the
worst he, had ever seen. He stated
that for many- Hours they never
knew exactly where * they were on
the lake, The tug was in charge
of G. Kuiarnarsh, of Midland. None
of the seven -`man crew was inured.
A scow, which the tug was towing,
broke loose about 3 a.m. Sunday.
It was later spotted by a United
States Coast Guard amphibian
plane near the mouth of South Bay
on the southern shore of Manitoulin
Island. The craft, owned by the
Waubaushene Navigation Company,
had among its, crew the following:
Arthur Bargey, Midland; Barney
Tucker, Waubaushene; Chief En-
gineer Harry Stirling, Burlington.
There are Scandinavian, French
and -ancient Egyptian legends.which
claim to have 'liven the Chrisfrnas
tree to the', world. The first auth-
entic mention of a Christmas tree
is^ of one in Strasbough, Germany,
1605.
