An 18.yg r-oid Goderich girl
testified that a male acquaintance
forced his way into the house
where she was baby-sitting, picked
up a. butcher, knife and said; "I'd
rather kill you than look at you."
Joseph McLaughlin of Dublin,
was fined $150 and. costs, or 30 days
in jail, when he was convicted -
here Thursday of possessing an
offensive weapon for a purpose
dangerous to the public .peace.
McLaughlin, whose defence was
conducted by lawyer Frank Cal-
laghan, of Goderich, was ordered
to • report to a probation officer.
He was instructed to stay out of
Goderich and leave the girl, Bar-
bara McCormick, alone unless she
informs the probation officer that
she wants the youth's companion-
ship again.
He agreed to enter into recogniz-
ance of $200 to keep the -peace for
the next 18 months.
Under cross-examination, Mist:
McCormick said that McLaughlin
had driven her to the home .of Mrs,
William Mohring on Elizabeth
street where she was supposed to
baby-sit on the evening of Septem-
ber 23.
Came Back Twice
Earlier in her testimony:, the girl
said that, McLaughlin came back to
the house at about 8.15 p.m. and
stayed 15 to 20 minutes. He was
drinking wine.. He left after she
told him, she "couldn't have any
'guys in the house."
Later, he returned and hammer-
ed on the door. He 'smashed the.
glass in the door and threatened
to kill her if she didn't let him in;
She let him in. •
He pushed her, then went to-
ward the kitchen. When he came
back, he had a'butcher knife which
had been in the sink. The knife
blade was about eight or nine
.inches' long. McLaughlin's hand
was bloody as a result of smashing
the glass in the door, she noted.
Miss McCormick screamed and
tried to get away, she told the
court, In the scuffle, she sustained
a cut :about one inch long on the
.inside Of her left elbow. She in.
