R,obent n's re- cent suggestion that "Goderich Police" be painted on the sides of the town cruiser was brought to the commission's attention by MagistrateMolmes. On motion of the magistrate, the commission agreed to have the cruiser lettered as suggested. The magistrate , informed the mayor that he and Judge Fingland had discussed police matters while, the mayor was away on holidays and they had decided on a course of action. But „the magistrate said he preferred to discuss applications at this particular meeting and leave other matters in abeyance. The magistrate stated that he had found "several very good men" among the applications. He ex plained that he had checked on the most proinising applicants by mak- ing 'telephone calls to the magis- trates, crown attorneys and police chiefs in the centres where the applicants reside: Salary Question "There isn't a shadow of a doubt we'll have to pay higher top, sal- aries," Magistrate Holmes warned. If the town wants good men, it will have to pay for them, he said. The maximum salary for con- stables, excluding the chief con- -stable, is_43,809..im-Goderich,„now.- At -Sarnia; the maximum- ts-$4;200 and, this will go to $4,400 next year, he .said. The starting salary for con- stables was recently increased here from 1$3,000 to $3,200. An officer's salary goes up $200 .every. year until the maximum is ',reached. At an earlier commission meet= ing, there was some discussion of the possibility of sending new town constables to attend courses at the Ontario Police College in Toronto. On Friday, IVIagistrate Holmes said that the' chief of police at London has offered to admit Goderich con- stables to short training sessions which he plans 'for his own men.
