TREAT YOUR FAMILY TO A GOOD MOVIE 1 1 1 1111N•N•N•••O•N1i•N•••Nw•N•••••••H••••NN THE GODE H SIGNALSTAR I 4 Learned To Ski'On McGaw Farm, Wins New Zealand SIaIom Title A Goderich boy, who learned to ski on a. farm at McGaw, this year won the New Zealand slalom championship at an average speed of 79.6 miles an hoar. That's fast going for a man on skis—especially waen he has to steer through 25 gates to finish the course—but Kayrn (Rod) Alain, 27, is an old hand at it. A former student at Goderich Collegiate Institute, Kayrn left Goderich when he was about 15 years old and has since become better known as Rod to ,many people. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Alain, Victoria street, and grandson -Of Mr. and Mrs. Alden Arlin, East street. Rod started his skiing career on the old Alain farm at McGaw. Later he skied at Banff and last year he was in Quebec. This year he went to New Zealand as a competfthr and instructor, and, for the past few weeks, he has been skiing in Austria. During his recent stay in New Zealand, where he won the slalom championship, Rod was featured in Hoel Holmes' Sports Talk column in the New Zealand Gazette. The article reads as follows: THE CHATEAU.—A sandy -hair- ed Canadian - pro. skier called Kayrn Rod Alain crouched poised at the peak of the run-in to the ski jump. He was waiting for a lull in the wind. An official call, "He's on his way!" Allin jumped. Split seconds later the watching crowd of skiers on the slope of Yankee Slalom, Mt. Ruapehu, were staring down tensely, silently, Alain had crashed, it looked bad. Splintered bits of skis drifted down the slope to where he lay in a twisted heap. The Ski Patrol—Red Cross of the snow—glided in trailing a stretcher sled. The crosses on the backs of their windbreakers stood out starkly. Then a rather hysterical burst of clapping broke out. You get that way: when you zspect a man has broken all his arms and lags—sand he stands up and walks away. Said Harvey Clifford, chief ski instructor: "I bet I know what he was thinking. He was worrying about breaking the skis he was to use for the ski trial." l pat later with Rod Allan. Clif- ford had been right. The Canadian had busted the skis—flat-busted 'em beyond hope of repair—which were to have brought him world fame . . . on .i$,uapehu. Sugar Snow A momentary diversion. If you carelessly fall out of an aeroplane you'll free -fall at a speed of 126 mph—plus, depending upon your streamlining. The world record speed on skis is just a fraction under 100 mph— se you'll appreciate those skis are offering the merest resistance. Thus the skis themselves become important. Fastest snow is iced "sugar snow." It's granulated. Maybe it's not particularly interesting from the point of, view of ordinary ski- ing, but popular with the speedster. Explained Clifford, "We'll never set a speed record in Canada. We' just haven't got the right condi- tions. "I told these boys: There's a mountain down in New Zealand we can set a world record on.' They were keen. They came dbwn with me." Waiting way round the world just for one ppurpose. , Now-, they were a write - But Rod still has a chance. Within an hour or so yesterday— such is the goodwill among skiers —he had had the offer of another' pair of speed skis. Here's hoping he makes it. o -o 0 tLYTH MINISTER MOVES Rev. A. W. Watson, minister of Blyth United Church for the past The boys—who form the team of Canadian pros. at the Chateau— are still dead keen. They've experienced with various slopes under various conditions. Now they've reached a stage where they simply await the right day. The mountain can change its character in a matter of an hour. Slow tmow can become icy and treacherously . fast almost before you are aware of it. The Canadians are up on the slopes every day. They are watch- ing for the freeze which must come soon. - Said Clifford: "If we don't break the record we'll come very close. And the boy that has the best chance of breaking it is Rod Arlin." Another Pair That's why Rod Alain at a time when you and I would have been looking for a doctor, was instead looking for two smashed skis. They were special plastic -coated jobs and he'd brought them half 'aa CI=CI ICIC ► L°Mga yteri-ICICZMIWZ k]ITZt,aG71zvl,4elzP Me -I IMIZ a 1 .V C f To everyone, we wish • very joyous Holiday Season ...one that will ionglogliirdsured for its .many !happy .memories, THE MAJOR STORE We're sounding off to wish you and,, yours a Christmas ,that hits all the high notes of happiness, good cheer and good, fellowship..
