Gordon Sinclair is probably Canada's best known newspaper
personality. There is hardly an adult who has not read bis
newspaper articles or heard his voice on CBC radio or tele-
vision. And few can bear Sinclair with equanimity; one either
dislikes him,or admires him. The little gaffer here is obvious-
ly one of the latter.
Donated Articles Adorn New
Club Rooms At Kingsbridge
KINGSBR1DGE, Dec. 17. -- St.
Joseph's sub -division, CWL, Kings-
bridge, held their monthly meet-
ing in the new parish club rooms
on December 15th. The president,
Mrs. Ray Dalton, presided. Father
Van Vynckt °polled- the meeting
with prayer.
A report of the last party was
given. Plans were completed for
the Christmas party to be held
December 27th. Christmas greet-
' jugs were read from Bishop Mc-
Carthy, of Nelson, Be., also from
Father Michel Dalton. It was
agreed to send a spiritual bouquet

which had belonged to Father
Boubat, a, former pastor, and a
cupboard which had belonged to
ATr. Sullivan': grandparents.
Mrs. Bernadine O'Loughlin don-
ated a mantlepiece which belonged
to her mother.

DUNGANNON, Dec. 17.—Erskine
Christmas Concert. --Rev. W. Mac -
Clean was chairman for the annual
Christmas concert at the Erskine
Presbyterian Church. A short pro-
gram of songs and recitations by
the children.of the Sunday School
was enjoyed. A warm welcome
was extended to the C.G.I.T. group
of girls from Lucknow by Mary Lou
McAllister, after which the girls
presented their candlelight and
vesper service. Miss Kae McIntosh
was accompanist 'for the service.
Miss Glad McDonald assisted the
girls and . MacClean brought
the Christma message. Jewel
Reed thanked thbgirls and their
leaders lor coming. O1afig were
distributed to the chiidren arid'
lunch and candy was served in
the basement -to conclude a very
pleasant evening.

Donald Glenn on the -birth of their
daughter at GodWich hospital on
December 1.
Mr. George Dawson, who has fin-
ished his first season .of
has returned home to his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. K. K. Dawson.
. Friends are pleased that Mr.
Gordon Congram was able -to re-
turn home after a serious bout with
pneumonia at Wingham hospital.
Word was received last week
that Mrs. Arthur Grewftt (fprmerly
Muriel Bowden) had passed away
at a hospital in Windsor. She was
a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Bowden (nee Tilly Bowers),
St. Thomas, cousin of the Sproul
family of this village. Her hus-
band predeceased her eariler this
fall. Surviving are' three teenage
children.
Mr. Ken Brown, Ottawa, who is
taking a course at Clinton RCAF,
visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Wilbur Brown.
Mr. Will Stothers is ill ..at his
home with pneumonia and under
the doctor's care.
Mrs. J. J. Ryan has closed, her
home and will spend the winter
with her daughter, Mrs. Gordon
Kidd, Islington.
Mr. Carl Sievert, one of the
,Goderich Harbouraires, sang with
the • group on 'CKNX-TV Sunday
afternoon.
Latest word of Mrs. Mathew
Shackleton at Victoria Hospital,
London, is that she is able to take
somei steps in, a walker.
Mr. Vernon Glenn, who sailed
the past season, is home with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Glenn.
United Church Christmas Dinner.
— The United Church Sunday
School enjoyed the annual 'Christ-
mas dinner at the church on Fri-
day night. Th meal was served
by the husband S of the lady Sunday
School teachers. A social time
followed, beginning with a sing-
song led by Rev. R. Kennedy with
Mrs. Durnin Phillips at the piano.
A trio, Tom Fowler, Wilmer Er-
rington, Carl Sievert sang. Miss
Marylin Anderson aiso sang. Those
giving recitations were Billy ;Croz-
ier, Beth and Cathey Kennedy,
Donna Pentland, Patricia Eedy and
Mary Lou Henry. Mr. Frank Pent-
land, superintendent, spoke. A
film "Musical Ride" was shown by
Mr. Allan Reed.
Candlelight Service. —
On Sunday evening the
girls with their leaders, Mrs. Herb
Finnigan and Mrs. R. Kennedy,
presented a candlelight service.
They were assisted by the choir,
who led in the carol singing. Rev.
R. Kennedy sang a Christmas solo.
Christmas Concert Held. — The
annual day school and Sunday
School Christmas concert was held
on Tuesday night. Rev. Kennedy
presided for the variety .prbgram.
Santa appeared at the close and
was welcomed by a throng of child-
ren
for the usual treat of an
orange and a bag of candy. Hearty
applause was given in recognition
of the fine p •ogram prepared by
the teacher S' rs. Gordon Ander-
son, Mrs. Man' an music
supervisor, Mrs." merson1TRogers.
Mrs. Wilbur Brown on Saturday,
attended the funeral. Of her Uncle,.
the late William Reed, of Galt.
He was the last member of the
family of seven children of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Paul Reed, Ash-
field. ,His wife passed' away ex-
actly one month ago.

CANADIAN ASSETS.RECORD
The Royal Jank . of Canada com-
pleted its 1957 fiscal year on Nov-
ember 30th with total assets at the
highest point ever attained by a
Canadian bank. v,..Ixierease.-for 4
year amounted to $189,246,29'7, re-
sulting in a total asset pgure of
$3,760,544,617. Assets of the bank
have increased and set new records
for Canadian banking every year
since 1947.
The steady upward trend in de-
posits, noted during recent years,
continued in 1957. The increase
under this heading amounted to.
$148,307,710 to bring the Royal
Bank's total to $3,426,6P145,, a
new record for Canadian banks.
Commercial loans total $1,431,-
188,052, an increase of $136,095,026
over the figure of a ye:ir ago. Call
and short loans to brokers and in-
vestment dealers have increased by
$72,874,172 and now total $238,163, -

Loans on residential mort-
gages are also .up, having increased
from $186,200,416 to $216,590,777.
To assist in providing funds for
these purposes, securiti held by
the bank have been reduced by
some $29,000,000. Holdings of
.aovernment of Canada and provin-
cial • government securities are
shoim at $672,276,365 as compared
with $715,005,707 a year ago, while
holdings of other securities in-
creased from $492,218,188 to
$505,688,414.

ACLE, Dec. 16. — The annual
meeting of Nile WM.S. was held
at the home of -Miss Mary Currey.
The meeting was led by the pre-
sident, Mrs. W. Rutledge, and the
Christmas service of worship from
the Missiona0 Monthly was follow-
ed. It was decided that a bale of
'clothing for overseas relief would
be packed at the February meeting.
Miss Currey invited the society to
meet in' her home for the winter
months.
The next meeting will be held
on January 8. The chapter of the
study book on Japan .was given,
after which Miss Currey conducted
the election of officers.
