Observe Safety Rules
When Decorating Your
Family Christmas Tree
No sane marc would lug a drum-
ful of gasoline into his front„room
to serve as the focal point of a
wuck-long celebration. But many
do 5ott3elhing nearly as dan-
gerous each year; we put up a
Christmas tree.
Your beautiful tree, its wood
and foliage loaded with pitch and
resin, is one of the most combust-
ible objects you can bring into a
home. Care in its handling and
decoration should keynote safety
measures that are mandatory for
all of your holiday decorating
activities.
o caution officials of safety or-
ganizations whose safety engineers
each year must read reports of
,flame -filled horror during. what
should be the fiappiest of holiday
seasons.
To protect your family, here are
some things that you can do:
Buy from a dealer you know,
who'll give you fresh stock. In
many areas there's not much you
can do about tree freshness; trees
are cut ahead of time, and shipped
in.
Buy Small Tree
Buy a small tree; the smaller
the better. Until you're ready to
et it up, keep tree in a cold place,
s:.ch as in an unheated garage.
Be sure that it's kept standing in
water.
Saw off an inch or two of trunk
:above original cut, before placing
tre in stand. The fresh cut re-
moves the sap -sealed trunk end
and permits the tree to draw water
from reservoir in stand. NEVER
use a stand that doesn't have a
water reservoir.
Some handy men report that ad-
dition of one of the water-soluble
plant foods to water in reservoir
helps to preserve tree's freshness.
Check light strings, now, for
worn, cracked or brittle insulation,
tracked sockets, loose socket lead-
in wires and damaged plugs.
Unless you're very sUre of what
you're about, skip repairs to insul-
ation or plugs. Throw string away
and replace with new equipment.
USE TESTED, LABORATORY AP-
PROVED LIGHTING EQUIPMENT
ONLY. -
Keep From Heat
When you set up the tree, keep
it away from doorways and other
traffic areas in the home. Never
set up near a radiator or other
source of heat.
Never use lighted candles on
trees or with other evergreen dec-
orations. So place your light
strings that bulbs do not touch
needles or branches, Check fre-
quently to see that warping of
branches does not twist bulbs
against any foliage.
Don't overload any one house
circuit with too many light strings.
Some cord sets are equipped
with fuses; so much the better.
If yours are Jess elaborate strings,
be sure that the house circuit
carrying your strings is fused with
no more than a 15 -ampere fuse.
Be absolutely certain to turn tree
lights off at bedtime, or if you're
away from home.
Never leave small children un-
attended in the room where the
Christmas tree is displayed. A
resin -fed fire can go out of control
in seconds and youngsters will
most certainly become confused in
seeking an exit.
Just as soon as needles turn
brown, become brittT• >; start to
shed, take that tree ► 4-0n.
Never smoke near t e tree.
Water -type extinguishers, buck-
ets, of water or a hose that's con-
nected to a water source should
be near at hand. However, don't
he a hero. Get everyone out of
the house and call the fire depart-
n?ent before you tackle a fire.
Your best bet in handling the
tree situation is, of course, to set
a tree up outside the house, and
use either a very small live tree
or an artificial tree indoors,.
Todays decorative lighting
equipment offers so many possibil-
ities that there need be no lack
of glowing hospitality in the home i
if you dispense with a large, coin-
bustible indoor decoration.
