Daily Paper Up
To lOc A Copy
Further indication of the con-
tinually- rising costs in the produc-
"tion of a newspaper came Tuesday
with the announcement by The
Toronto Daily Star that this paper
will sell at ten cents a copy, effec-
tive Monday, December 9. The
rate for delivery to homes by car-
rier will be increased to 55 cents a
week on that date.
Said The Star: "During the past
six years the cost of newsprint,
labor and news gathering has in-
creased so substantially that it is
now the generally accepted belief
- in -the newspaper industry that the
10 -cent price will soon be general
that goes into some copies of The
Daily Star now exceeds the single
copy price. The portion of the new
price retained by The Star will still
net cover newsprint, ink, produc-
tion and Iiews gathering costs."
As those in the newspaper busi-
ness know, the subscription price
paid for anyt newspaper, including
weekly newspapers, barely cover's
the cost of the newsprint, ink and
mailing charges. Advertising is
what carries any newspaper. Few
readers realize that if such a news-
paper as the Tordhto Star carried
no advertising whatever but only
news and pictures, the cost to
readers would have to be in the
neighborhood of from 75 cents to
90c for every single copy.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. IMarshhad as
guests last week -end, Mr. and Mrs.
in most metropolitan centres. The W. Cockerline, of Pilot Mound,.
