NEWS OF
AUBURN, Nov. 25: The Novem-
ber meeting of the Auburn Wo-
o men's Institute was held Tuesday
of est week in the LOL Hall with
a large attendance. ' The first vice-
president, Mrs. Thomas Haggitt,
presided with Mrs. R. J. Phillips
at the piano. Prayer was led by
Mrs. Robert Chamney. The min-
utes of the previous meeting were
read by the secretary, Mrs.• Bert
Craig, who also gave the financial
report, Mrs. Tom Lawlor and Mrs.
William Hensch were appointed to
look after the exchange of die gifts
and the shower for the Children's
Aid at the (December meeting, A
duet was sung by Mrs. Doi' aid
Haines and Mrs. Wes. -Bradnock,
in Negro costumes. The highlight
of the meeting was an address by
His Honor, Judge Frank Fingland.

Activities and Public Relations.
Judge Fingland said hp was de-
lighted to be asked to speak to
the 'W.L in Auburn as t *lis was the
community where he had spent his
boyhood days. The speaker spoke
on the Relationship of Jury to the
Administration of Justice. In thid
changing world, a thirst for know-
ledge and understanding is great
in all countries and we must help
them to gain this knowledge if we
are to help keep world peace. He
explained the method of selecting
jurors from the assessment roll of
each municipality of the county.
He closed has address by saying
that we all could help other na-
tions to the freedom which they
all want by trying to understand

with the Queen and The Institute
Grace. The hostesses, Miss Viola
Thompson, Mrs. Gordon McDougall,
Mrs. Duncan MacKay and Mrs.
Herbert Mogridge served a delic-
ious lunch.
Mrs. Wilhelmina Leatherland
celebrated her 80th birthday re,
cently at the home of her daugh-
ter, Mrs. Norman Vincent, Mr. Vin-
cent and family. She was born at
Egmondville, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Herman Bobolz and also at-
tended public school there. In
1900 she was married to Mr.
Leatherland and farmed in Tucker -
smith Township. Mr. Leatherland
passed away, in 1918 so Mrs. Lea-
therland and family moved to the
farm now owned by her son, Alvin.
She also resided on a farm in
East Wawanosh until a few years
ago, when she hived in Blyth. For
the last five years she has resided
in Hullett. She has a family of
five, Alvin, on the Auburn -Blyth
road, Harvey, Blyth, Mrs. Frank
Raithby (Viola), Auburn, (Mrs. Reg.
Shultz (Irene)`, R.R. 3, Blyth, and
Mrs. Norman Vincent (Anne), of
Londesboro; also 1'1 grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren. She
is a member of Knox Presbyterian

of Lawrence Nesbitt and Jack,

Carl Govier gave a good report
of the convention held recently
in Guelph.
The third meeting of the Auburn
A,nnettes 4H Club was, held' last
Friday evening at the home of
'the leader, Mrs. Alfred Nesbitt.
After the business period, some of
the skirts, were cut out. A dis-
cussion on the method of shrink-
ing and pressing wool, followed.
Lunch was, served by Bernice (Mc-
Dougall and Marie Leatherland.
The sympathy of this community
is extended to Mrs. Gordon Dobie
whose father, Edmund HallowaY,
passed away recently in Wingham
hospital. The Tate Mr. Halloway
was born at Crosshill and spent
his early life at Ethel. He later
moved to Wingham where he mar-
ried Susan Forsyth, who predeceas-
ed him eight years ago. He was
in his 78th year and had been in
failing health in Wingham hos-
pital for the last five years. He
is survived by three sons, Ted and
Stewart, of Wingham, and Ross,
of Toronto; also three daughters,
Mrs. Herb Foxton (Myrtle), Wing -
ham, Mrs. Leo McLuhan (Doris),
and Mrs. Gordon Dobie (Beth), of
Auburn. One daughter and one
son predeceased him. Funeral der -
vices were conducted by Rev. Dr.
A. Nimmo at the Currie funeral
home with..interment in Wingham

Nomination Meeting. . The ani-
inual village nonfinatiOn meeting
was. held last Friday with a very
sinali - attendance.. Mr. Ralph
,Munro was cliairmaan. The 1657
clerks of the village, M. Donald
Fowler, declared the meeting open-
ed' for nominations. Messrs Ralph
'D. Munro, (Bert Craig and William
J. Craig were returned by agelam.-
Latien. rj.'be village has installed
some new sidewalks during the
year, and also enlarged the en-
trance of the water tala"ks for faire
protection so the Blyth District
fire truck could work at them if
the need arise.
Visitors with Mr. a Mrs. Mait-
land Allen were Mrs. H. J. Allen,
Mrs. K. Stowe, Mrs. A. Allen, of
Goderich and Mrs. Henry Breen,
of New Hampshire.
Mrs. Ed. Davies has returned
from the Royal Winter Fair where
she was guest of the Department
of Agriculture as a 441 Club
leader.
Mr. and Mrs. Keith Machan,
Randy and Trudy, visited on Thurs-
day evening with his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. James Machan, and fam-
ily, at Moncrief.
Mr. Fred Toll and Mr. Kenneth
McDougall were in Toronto last
week attending the Royal Winter
Fair.
Pte. Allen Craig has Arrived with
the forces in Germany and report-
ed a good crossing.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Raithby, of
London, visited last Thursday with
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James
Raithby.
Mr. Frank Walters, of Ingersoll,
is visiting with his sister, Mrs.
Arthur Grange, and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Andrews
have moved to Lucknow where Mr.
Andrews has secured a position on

attended the funeral of the late
Mrs. Harry Youngblut at Zurich,
last Wednesday.
Mr. Gary Bird went the week-
end with friends in Brantford.
Mr. and Mrs. Keith Arthtur and
Mrs. Duncan MacKay were London
visitors last Friday.
Mr. Duncan McIntyre, of De-
troit, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs.
George Beadle celebrated his '75th
birthday. Mrs. .McIntyre (formerly
Ada Beadle) served a birthday din-
ner and over 80 guests called dur-
ing the day to extend congratula-
tions. Mr. McIntyre is well known
here, visiting every summer in this
village.
Mr. Harold Kirkconnell was a
visitor last week with his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kirkconnell
and family. His boat the Ericeson
was docked at Goderich for a few
hours.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald' Taylor, of
Belleville, spent the week -end with
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert
Taylor.
Mr. Alvin Plunkett is a guest in
the State of Arizona with other
delegates of a machinery company.
Mr. and (Mrs. Louis Blake, Faye
and Mary Anne visited last Thurs-
day with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Andrew Kirkconnell and family.
Mr. Walter ,Debold is a patient
in South Huron Hospital with a
fractured arm. .Mr. Debold• was
putting a chain on his truck to pull
it from the ditch with a sand truck,
when a car driven .oy Craig Bailey,
of RCAF, Clinton, collided with the
sand truck and smashed into the
Debold truck and against him,
fracturing his arm. Mr. Bailey's
car was wrecked.
Miss Mary Stintson, of Ripley,
visited last week' with Mrs. John
Graham.
Recent visitors with Mr. and Mrs.
Lorne Popp, Douglas and Diane
were Mr. and 'Mrs. Oijo Posp, of
Dungannon, and Mr. and Mrs. Mer-
edith Young, Marjorie and Donald.
Miss Doreen Howatt, of East
Wawanosh, showed her 4-H Club
calf in the Queen's Guineas at the
Royal Winter Fair last week.

Lucknow, was adinitted to 41,1,9N.;

here after she suffered facial lacer-
ations in an accident last Thursday
The car she was iving was
damaged to the extent of about
F300 when it went out of control
in some loose gravel and hit n
fence post. The mishap occurred
as the vehicle was rounding a
curve on the 1.11th concession of
Colborne Township.
Police said that Elmer Hunter,
a passing motorist, took Mrs. Mc-
Donagh to Jaospital in Goderich.
She was released the following day.
Provincial Constable Jack Parkin-
son investigated.
Car Strikes Pole
The driver escaped injury when
a car collided with a hydro pole
at Cambria road and Napier street
early last Thursday nrorning. John
at the wheel when the accident -
happened, according to police.
Damage to the car was estimated
at close to $.300 and it will cost
Li.i3d8. to replace the pole, police
There was about $75 damage to
car driven by William Sturdy, 17,
of Goderich, when the vehicle was
in collision with the rear end of
a truck owned by Boyes Transport,
of Clinton, and driven by M. Scott,
of Varna. The accident occurred
in front of a grocery store and
service station on the Huron road
in Goderich Saturday morning.
