Presbyterian Anniversary.—Ideal
Autumn weather prevailed for the
109th annivensary of the Ashfield
Presbytenian Church on October 6.
The fires kindled long ago by
sturdy Presbyterian ,ancestors are
still btuning and are fanned into
a flame by the fidelity of these de-
scendants of the good pioneers.
Rev. Neil MeCombie, lately in-
ducted minister of Ashfield and
Ripley, was the speaker of, the
day. He was greeted with large
con)gregabionis morning and even-
ing and his earnest addresses were
welcomed with close attention. In
the morning with the text, "With-
out Me ye can do nothing," and in
the evening on 'the parable of the
talents. The choir was assisted by
Miss Murray, of Windsor, who so
often has been generous with her
wonderful voice to her Ashfield
friends. In the evening, Mrs.
Hunter, of Tiverton, rendered "How
great Thou ern" Mrs. Gordon
Montgomery very efficiently was
organist for the day in the absence
of MTS. Simpson. Around the pul-
pit were beautiful decorations of
flowers and fruit.
Misses Mabel MacDonald, Salina
'MacDonald, Louise MacDo,nald,
spent the weekend in Lochalsh,
also Miss Murray and Miss Taylor,
of Windsor.

Colborne Taxes Hit All Classified Ads

These figures were Announced at
the Colborne Township Council
meeting last Friday evening.
Reeve Keruighan was authorized
to attend a meeting of the Gode-
rtioh Town Council and make ar-
rangements in connection, with fire
proteotion for the Townsitlp of
Colborne.
Mr. Watson was present to ask
'Council if they considered having
tax notices mailed this year. Mr.
Watson, tax collector, was given
authority, if he so desired, to mail
the notices in plaee of delivering
them as in former years.Mr.
Watson, who is also secretary -
treasurer of the School Area Board,
extended an invitation to Council
to attend open house in the new
school recently built at the corner
of concession 6, Eastern division,
on the evening of November 1st
between 7 and 8.30 'o'clock.
The 1957 assessment, es returned
by the assessor, Donald Haines,
shows an ircrease of $17,450 over
last year's figures. Total assessed
value is $1,794,339. Total papule -
tion is 1,163, a decrease of 33 from
that of the year 1956.

Yule Fair
4The October meeting of St.
Pefer's CWL was held in St, Peter's
school on Tuesday evening with
'Miss Helen McCarthy presiding.
Mrs. C. Gibbons, citizenship con-
vener, gave a report on the work
being done for the Hungarian New
Canadians. A clothing centre was
opened at the Town Hall operated
by St. Peter's Parish groups. Cloth-
ing, shoes, bedding, towels, cook-
ing utensils, etc. were distributed,
which were donated by town eiti-
zens. A donation was also given
by a former citizen of this town.
It was stated that more bedding
is needed, Basic English class -es
were also started.
An article,. "The Sacrament of
Dining Together" from the League
' Magazine was read by the press
convener.
The Stratford Deanery of CWL
will hold the annual Deanery meet-
ing in Goderich. on Ootober 23.
Father Hennessey, the Diocesan
Director of the CWL, will be the
guest speaker at the noon luncheon
to be held at the Bedford Hotel.
Plans are well under way for the
Christmas. Fair with all the con-
venersiiips .filled. Looking after
the home baking will be Mir, Clar-
ence Pollock; fancy work, apron
bar, and knitting, Mrs. C. Gibbons;
doll booth, Mrs. Josephine Chis-
holm and Mrs. Con Baechler;
t Christmas cake, Mrs. Richard Buch-
anan; tickets, Miss Elizabeth Tobin;
candy, Miss Margaret Evans; coun-
try Aare, Mrs. J. Sherratt. Mrs.
Norman Boyle will convene the tea.
Prizes for general proficiency
were awarded to three grade eight

zak and Betty Bailey. A Requiem
Mass is to be offered in November
for all deceased members of the
league. Pledge cards were dis-
tributed for the Diotesan Develop-
ment Fund. Contributions were

ship Fund and the Diocesan 'Re-
serve Fund.

has informed Tewn Council that it
does not wish to take responsibil-
ity for any accounts presented by
James F. ,MacLaren Associates, con-
sulting engineers, for work done
strictly at Council's request.
A letter, signed by R. G. John-
ston, PUC chairman, advised: "The
PUC employed J. F. IVIaeLaren As-
sociates to obtain plans for faire
new water system. These plans
were received and copies were
given to the members of Council.
"At that time, Council began
their own negotiations with J. F.
(MacLaren Associates, and we wish
it understood that any accounts
presented by these engineers for
their services be paid by the Coun-
eil„ as the Water Department is
not in a position to pay these
extra expenses"
A report on the Ranney well
system, made by the MacLaren firm
at Council's request, was present-
ed at the same meeting.
