MARITIMERS
AID FARMERS
Watch) for this on Monday, Dominion Day
Though there are more persons
out of woli,c in this district now
than at the same time last year,
farm labor Ls not too plentiful.
On Monday, 10 men from New-
foundland and New Brunswick
checked :n at the Goderich office ,_
of the National Employment Ser-
vice and they were picked up by
district farmers the same day.
Since April, 25 men from the
Maritimes have been assigned to
district farms through the Gode-
rich NES office.
The Maritimers are brought to
Toronto, then assigned whe ever
farm help is needed. Most of the
farm jobs are temporary' and the
men will no longer be needed by
late August when all the season's
clops are in.
Figures _taken from the NES re-
cords last week showed 160 men -
and 94 women looking .for work,
compared to 116 men and 78 wo-
men who were jobless at this time
last year.
Since these figures were checked,
about . 40 'workers halve been laid
off at the Canada Packers poultry
plant in Clinton, but_ it is hoped
these people will be recalled with-
in two weeks.
Some of the unemployed people
in the district will be absorbed by
a Clinton RCAF Station, where extra
Ititchen and cleaning help is riaed-
Vd to cope with the-lhan esof
air cadets who will attend summer
cana!p at the base.
At the present time, activity is
rather slow in the construction
field in the county.
