The beginning is small but it is foolish to despise small things. The first 8hipmcnt of cattle to great Britain, barely fifteen years ago, was only about a scare. The shipments this year will probably reach xoo,0oa head, The demand for eggs in Great Britain is almost unlimited, and as there ie no difficulty in keeping eggs for months in good condition, there is every reason to believe that Can- ada will be able to find a good pay- ing market in Great Britain for every egg kept out of the American market by the McKinley Bill, and more, too, if we have them to sell. the f+.licv of the Oppesltican and prepare the party be leads for the rumored possibility of a general election. There is a feoling abroad that the Liberals have decided on a stronglyaggressive programme.and for this reason Mr. Laurier's speeches are somewhat anxiously anticipated. PBACE has not been proclaimed in Central America after all. The thirty thousand Guatemalians and twenty thousand Salvadorians are in the field still, bluemoulding for a fight, so to speak. As these armies compose nearly the whole able- bodied population fit for military service, the War, should it continue with the usual Spanish American ferocity, will probably resemble in its results the famous fight between the Kilkenny cats. When the two republics get through with their war, it will be easy for a third to step in and conquer the winner. THE recent accident to the Sault Ste. Marie Canal has once again drawn attention to the yast in- terests served by that busiest of artificial water -ways. Last year its registered tonage was 7,221,935, valued at $83,000,000, seventy times as much as in 1856. Its traffic now exceeds that of the Suez Canal by one-fourth. In giving water transportation instead of rail, the Sault Canal has been of enor- mous value in developing the re- sources of the West and Northwest, Among its freights last year were more than four million tons of iron ore ; and it is estimated that had its traffic from the date of construc- tion been carried at railroad charges the difference -in cost to shippers would have been three hundred million dollars. Alarmed by the great losses ensuing upon the re- cent accident, Congress is hasten- ing to provide a second lock at the :Sault, and to widen and deepen the waterway below it. By May, 1892, the Dominion Government expects to open its independent Banal, the cast of which will be some 3,000,- 000. During the past twenty years, since the construction and success- ful working of the Suez canal, there nas been a decided revival of inter- est in canals. It is now clearly recognized that their deyelopement is to have an important place , in the future of transportation. aautoilter of Epgl[ h .4,rds c +";atre.n1 tr =.tl letters ce+- lit V the eses1;4.ei' rill lc• given A Free Trip er est. i Also, 1n carder 4'. 1.lcrht illi+fu911 .4.-+ o l,aaaa"t::t• prints, will he a[rar ae3 t A Free trill^ to Florid% ASilver TeiFct.8f?. Depress- ing news of all kinds is being sent out from Winnipeg with no other object, it is known, than to spike the market for the benefit of specu- Iators—and, perhaps, to injure Man- itoba. All the information that we have been able to obtain is to the effect that frost has not in any way injured the wheat. Prof. Saunders of the Central Experimental farm, on Saturday telegraphed to the Agricultural Department at Ottawa that the crop is sale, and Idr. Mc- Millan, the agent of the Manitoba Government, has had the most positive information from Premier Greenway that the damage to the wheat crop was very slight, being confined principally to hail storms and not to frost. Messrs. Verity & Sons, implement manufacturers, of Exeter, also received word on Tuesday that the crop for the most part had been successfully gathered, and what remains standing is too far advanced to be susceptible to the frosts. This firm has also re- ceived substantial proof of the security of the crops, in a large order for straw cutters, plows, etc., to be shipped at the earliest con- venience. This word was received on Tuesday over the wires, and had the crops been injured to any great extent, as reported, such a large order would not have been forthcoming.
