i BY MARY' GUEST
What a Pity we cannot have outdoor, skating in the
Park on the Square! ,It is true ' that wee cat skate at the
Arena, but there•is a rare magic about outdoor skating,
especially at xight when the snow sparkles`'' li diamonds
and the trees cast stark shadows across the . <r- en greund
until you cat hardly tell W40):C. the shadows begin and the
trees. end. Old familiar friends suddenly have all the. glamor -
and excitement of, strangers in this vichanted world. of ice
and snow. And what could match the delight;,,of skating, to to
music, when the : band is playing lilting waltztunes and your
skates cut clean and sharp in the crisp • new ice? '
. Did you ask what prompted all this idle dreaming?' Com-
ing
oming home the -other night I saw a group of youngsters hosing
their front lawn:. Now there's a house that should.. be - very
popular, this week!
With preparations for Christmas rapidly getting into.
high gear and the lines growing longer in the Post O..e
(note to the Postmaster General: when, pray,, will Goderich
rate a Douse -to -house mail delivery?) 1 suppose 1 should say
something "seasonal," but who wants to read about Christmas
shopping or baking when they are up., to, their ears in just
that? _ Here's a thought_ ethough-when ..Christmas_....is..:.over,
Why not send your Christmas cards to the Sick Children's
Hospital in Toronto? • 1 do not know if there is any organ-
ization here in Goderich that collects Christmas cards, 'but if
there is, it is certainly not very well 'publicized. Our own •
Goderieh hospital, having very few child patients, does not
have much speed for a stockpile of Christmas cards.
My father always used to say "a man who keeps a
fighting dog has to be 'a fighting man," but I wonder what `
that makes a woman who keeps a fighting tomcat? The other
night a large stray cat wandered into the basement and was
immediately tackled by, the family dog. They scrapped up
and dawn the cellar steps, locked together in rage -the dog
had to be hauled away and locked up, (she wanted to get into
the act) and several gallons of water sluiced over the com-
batants before the unfortunate stray gave up and fled. All
this at one o'clock in the morning! Since then, our usually
placid Tom has been strutting about with a small rboulder on
his shoulder making life miserable for everybody.-
This
verybody. 'This may' seem to be rather a long way frain Christmas
and yet :even animals- play their part in the" Christmas cele-
bration
elebration for an old legend has it that, because the animals with
their gentle breath warmed the stable where Jesus was born,
they were granted the power of speech for one hour on
Christmas Eve. I like to think that perhaps a cat was present
in the stable that night, with his great wide eyes gleaming in
the lamplight. Cats being what they are though, I am sure.
that the gift of speech would be haughtily rejected. Perhaps
it is just as well.
See you next week!
bale and it was decided to have a
quilt ready for the new year bale.

ers; first vice-president, Miss E.
MacMillan; second vice-president,

Mason McAllister; press secretary,

Jones. Mrs.. (Rev.) McClean install-_
ed the officers for the taming year.

be held in the homes. Mrs. W. J.
Reid is in -charge of packing Christ-
mas cheer boxes 'for the shut-ins.

ering and dinner an Friday even-

Stanley McGrattetn in honor of Mr.
McGratten's birthday.

culture Hall on Friday evening for
Mr, and Mrs. David Ralph Alex-
ander Nivins (nee Beatrice Marg-
aret Hayes). Mrs. Ileen Si'blib read

Letter Received. - Mrs. Abner
Morris received -a letter from
her late husba'nd's niece, Miss
Alice Morris, daughter of the
late Ken Morris, formerly of
the Nile district. Miss Morris
is a resident of. Oakland,
California. In writing, she recalls
former days 'in these parts and
this time of year especially re-
membering 'old friends .from whom
shoe would like to hear. We might
also mention that aur Mrs. Morris
here of the village, -is keeping busy
making her 'braided m,ati and it is
interesting 'to know that during
the ten years o'f residence 'in Dun-
gannon, she is now working on l
her 550th mat. She finds it an
interesting 'hobby and has' the 1
names of all the people for whom
she has made them and, the year
they were made. During this
eriod of years, she had the mis-
,£ortune to fall -on slippery pave-
rrient-and' break her right hand
.which :left her 'handicapped for a
mile, but . as soon as,- she was'
able she resumed thre yvprk. We
ere sure very- few have accom-
plished so many articles of this l
type.... r ,
