Broke Suspended Sentenee Te.
London Youth Given
Stiff Warning
A 18 -•-year-old London youth who rooznin house and "tried to barge
was told by Magistrate A. F. Cook
two months ago to stop bothering
a Wingham district girl was found
guilty in court here last week by
Magistrate D. E. Holmes of break-
ing the terms of his suspended.
sentence.
The case was adjourned for
sentence until November 18; and
the magistrate warned the youth,
Kenneth Mortis, that a great deal
would depend on his behaviour
during that time.
At first a plea of guilty • was
entered by the youth's counsel,
Samuel Lerner, of London, but
this was changed to one of not
guilty. The plea was changed
when Mr. Lerner said he had
doubts whether Magistrate Cook
had jurisdiction, to impose the
terms of the suspended sentence.
In July, when convicted of
wounding the girl's younger bro-
ther, Mortis was told by Magistrate
Cook to stay out of ,Huron County
and to stay away from the girl
and not to try to contact her for
a period of two years.
The girl, Mary Eileen Holmes,
who works in London, told the
court •that Mortis. had "bothered".

posed.
She said she had "refused to
talk with him" on the first occas-
ion. She contacted London police
and they warned Mortis, she said.

ed a bus inspector to get a police-
man, Mortis left her.
Under cross-examination she
told the court that at one time she
had been engaged to Mortis but
changed her mind, and he refused
to accept her decisioxl
Mortis, in defence, said he was
satisfied now that the girl did not
wish .to see him any more. He
said he did not intend to bother
her in future.
In his decision, Magistrate
Holmes warned the youth that he
had "caused police, law officials
and Miss Holmes a lot of trouble.

jail."
Mortis was told to report to the
probation officer in London to
make arrangements for reporting
to him. Mr. Lerner said he had
checked with the officer and ''he.
had agreed to have the youth re-
port to him.

Wins Ottawa Speed 'Classic
Beats Famed European Cars
Corp Airport: The thunder of automobiles took over from the
roar of aeroplanes today as the Ottawa Light Car Club staged an
exciting afternoon of racing events. In the Touring Car Race, for
models under 1500 c.c., James Fergusson, of Toronto, drove his
production model Nash Metropolitan to yet another victory. In two
months Mr: Fergusson's Nash Metropolitan has been entered in,
and has won, four events . . . 'he had already won two races at
Edenvale, and Mrs. Fergusson recently won a hill climbing event with
it at Holland, N.Y.
The two-mile track at ,Carp has a lightly abrasive surface, and ten
laps at high speed call for superidr driving skill and automobiles that
•can "take it". Mr. Fergusson's top speed, according to his speedo-
meter was 80 to 85 m.p.h., while his average speed for the ten laps
was 60 m.p.h.*
