A. Y. "McLean Cites Sizeable Increase
in Value of Huron County Livestock
Vision and vigor of the individu-
al farmer coupled with an en-
lightened program of Government
assistance are the things on which
success of Canadian agriculture
must continue to depend, Andrew
Y. McLean, Liberal ALP. for Huron -
Perth commented last Thursday
in the House of Commons.
Mr. McLean, taking part in
House discussion of Agriculture
estimates, submitted that farmers
insisted on Federal Support legis-
lation and that a "realistic ap-
proach" be taken in establishing
the degree of that support. Such
a support, he said, must reckon
with prevailing farm production
costs.
He said farmers looked for and
were entitled to receive from Gov-
ernment that support necessary to
protect them from factors over
which they had no control, such as
weather and disease.
The future of agriculture, he
said, was not something about
which there need be despondency.
At the same time, there could be
no grounds for complacency:
Mr. McLean told the Commons
that during the period 1931 to 1951`
the value of livestock on Huron
farms increased from $7,473,000
to $36,378,000, or was multiplied
by five. During the same period,
the value of livestock across Can-
ada ,increased less than four times.
At Lite fast census, the county
stood first in the province in agri-
cultural worth.

SENDS IN 1921 SIGNAL
It must be housecleaning time
in Dearborn, Michigan, because the
Signal -Star this week received an
old copy of the Signal from Maud
M. MacKenzie of Dearborn. In a
remarkable state of preservation
the issue is that of February 10,
1921. Headline in the paper
reads, "A new Industrial Develop-
ment—Goderich to be centre for
the manufacture of flax harvesting
machinery." The article then went
on to relate the plans of the Na-
tional Shipbuilding Company Lim-
ited and its flax pulling machine.
The l same issue carried an ad of
the Union Bank of Canada with F.
Woollcombe as the local manager:

Conservative MP Critical of federal
Government Loss of British Markets
Rumblings of discontent in agri-
cultural communities came to a I
head on the floor of the House of
Commons lag Thursday when Els-
ton Cardiff, Conservative member
for Huron North, blamed the Fed
eilal Government for the loss of
United Kingdom markets for Can-
ada's agricultural products. •
He said he thought Britain would
buy Canadian dairy products if it
had the dollars with which to buy
them and he believed the Govern-
ment could be held responsible for
not having advanced any policy
that would make dollars available
to the U.K.
Mr. Cardiff said he noted that
t1 ree countries had announced
plans to pool milk supplies. He
recalled that he had made that
suggestion in the Commons a few
years ago and was still convinced
that a milk pooling system was the
only solution to the milk and dairy
problem.
# He contended than all milk
should be sold by grade, regardless
of the market into which it ultim-
ately flowed; that it should' bring
prices according to' those grades...
The Huron M.P. also voiced
criticism of Ottawa's announce-
ment, three months ahead of time,
that the floor price for hogs was to
PAGE TUB
be reduced three cents. The re-
sult had been that a lot of brood
sows had been marketed that never
should have been marketed, he
said.
