liristmas Cards on the Dining Room Table'
By Gavin 1EI. Green
-How eau we eat, drink and be
Merry when the old dining room
table is loaded. dowu with Christ
(Hill curds instead of eats and
,drinks, the Mainsprings that lead
to friendship and neighborly lo: e'!
Now', 1 havo gone into (tomes --
and so have you --and seen the
dining table, sideboard and walls
decorated with Christmas cards.
There was o.ue old couple who got
over 100 Christmas cards which
they had to get a grandduLgttter to
answer for them ltec'ause Christmas
card etiquette demands that you
return the complimeut if you wish
to keep up with the Joneses.
Inappropriate Gifts
1 also knew an old couple who
got 10 pounds of chocolate candies
from different Christmas friends,
is well as nylon hose and other
dainties. But neither one is fond
of chocolate candy, nylon hose, etc.,
instead of tine woollen goods for
old age.
Now, 1 know something about
Christmas cards, candy, necktirss,
handkerchiefs, dodo sox and other
knack -knacks, as I t'.trry the mail
from the Post Office for live differ-
ent neithbore' households. iiut, I
haven't beard any of theta kicking
about getting too many Christmas
cards or too much candy. Nor au►
1 kicilnng about tarrying their mail
as 1 haven't much else to do, be-
caue the Grit _government pays
me a fair salary,.payable monthly,
and I like to eat, drink anti be
merry and see my neighbors joyous.
at the Christmas season.
BU'i', I can't make my blood
circulate up to the print where 1
should forget my woes and love my
neighbor as myself on a table
loaded with Christmas cards, choco-
late candy, neckties, handkerchiefs
and sox with dodo pictures on them, «^
instead of nuts, figs, fruits, woollen
sox and gloves.
Novy,
if _the senders of Cnristnlas
cheer would use ii little commen
sense and judgment between Christ-
mas presents for the aged and the
young, much more Christmas joy
would abound. That is my print.
Makes His Point
No doubt some of the readers
of this article will say : "The old -
fellow is getting a little childish."
Perhaps I am, but d am only in my
9lst year and I can still st'e through
a knot -hole.
flowerer, if you eon -rend between
the lines you may get a few grains
of truth out of this chaff. I'm for
fewer- cards and more fodder on
the table.
Now I mean no offence to the
dealers in Christmas cards or the
senders or those that receive them.
But, if you and I ever live until
the place of the old Christmas cards
on the table is taken. by Limberer
cheese, Scotch #hortbred and that
other kind of Scotch that makes
you forget your woos and love your
neighbor as yourself, then, if I'm
on top of the ground. call Inc around
.'and I'll be on hand for my share.
Remember. I (ran eat, drink and be
merry with theta all,• without the
prelaent-day (Christmas card.
Nevertheless, as the air of the
Christmas season gets into my.
blood I feel that I should kind of 1
ball apologize to the younger gen-
eration for what I have said about
Christmas *cards, chocolate candy,
iiylen' these; siilrings; -neekt k'r
and other knick-knacks that are
._ to_ the fore this Christmas of 1952. -
The Old School
Now my dear readers, whether
you be old or young, friend or foe,
I want to let you know that I
have Seen 90 cold Das enaber blasts

gone days when there was neither

The old diniug table of pioneer
